Nationals prospect Reynaldo Lopez makes debut at Class A

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/8/15) Nationals pitching prospect Reynaldo Lopez made his season debut at Class A Potomac on Thursday. He pitched five scoreless innings, throwing 37 of his 54 pitches for strikes. Lopez retired the first eight batters he faced before giving up a hit in the third inning. He struck out three, walked none and gave up just two hits in the 2-1 victory.

Fellow prospect Lucas Giolito is expected to make his debut for Class A on Friday, MASNSports.com reports. Giolito and Lopez are rated the Nationals' No. 1 and No. 3 prospects respectively, according to Baseball America.

Report: Nationals P Giolito to be promoted to Class A this week

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/5/15) The Nationals will promote top pitching prospect Lucas Giolito to Class A Potomac this week, a highly-ranking club official has confirmed, according to MASNSports.com. Giolito was drafted by the Nationals in the first round (16th overall) in 2012. In 2014, the right-hander logged 98 innings for low Class A Hagerstown, and dazzled with a 2.20 ERA and 110 strikeouts.

Giolito is currently ranked the 7th best prospect in the game according to Baseball America, and No. 6 by MLB.com and Baseball Prospectus.

He had been working at the team's training facility in Viera, Fla. for the first month of the season, and could start as early as Wednesday for the P-Nats.

Lucas Giolito on an innings limit

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5/18/14) Nationals pitching prospect Lucas Giolito missed Saturday's start due to a team-imposed innings limit, according to MLB.com.

Giolito is coming off Tommy John surgery, and the Nationals want to make sure he doesn't throw too many innings. He's considered the club's top prospect, and is one of the best pitching prospects in the game despite his inexperience. Giolito has posted a 2.51 ERA in 32 1/3 innings.

Lucas Giolito 'ready to get going'

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/25/14) Nationals starting pitcher prospect Lucas Giolito said it feels great to be healthy and feeling strong 18 months removed from Tommy John surgery.

"It's the best feeling in the world," Giolito said, per MASNsports.com. "I'm ready to go, I'm ready to get going. It's just great that I was able to persevere through everything. I never had a setback. So it's great."

Prior to getting hurt, Giolito's fastball and curveball were always considered plus-plus pitches. After the surgery, he's developed a third pitch -- changeup -- for his repertoire that could make him even better.

"It just comes out of my hand feeling a lot better and a lot different," Gioltio said. "I really don't know (why). It's just one of those weird, quirky things that happens for some guys that get surgery. I know sometimes a pitch will feel different. But especially for the changeup, I have a lot better feel for it after the surgery.

"I was healthy before the surgery, obviously, in high school, and the changeup was kind of a work-in-progress thing. Now, it just feels like a lot more solid pitch."

Lucas Giolito gets high praise

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(2/2/14) Nationals pitching prospect Lucas Giolito got some high praise from pitching coordinator Spin Williams, according to MASN.

Giolito ranked as the team's top prospect according to Baseball America, and there's good reason for the ranking. Giolito was considered to be the top pick in the 2012 draft until arm issues dropped him to the Nationals at 16. Teams were worried Giolito would need Tommy John surgery, and chose to let him fall. While Giolito did undergo the procedure, he's flashed elite skills since his return.

His stuff has graded so well that Williams said Giolito's curveball was the best he had ever seen by a prospect. Williams has worked in baseball since 1979, so that's high praise. Giolito is coming into his first full season after surgery, and is not expected to move too quickly through the organization this year.
