Cubs OF prospect Albert Almora upbeat despite down year in 2014

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/3/15) After being considered a top-100 prospect by Baseball America the last two years, Cubs outfield prospect Albert Almora took a tumble down the rankings this year and is no longer considered among Baseball America's top 100 prospects heading into 2015.

Granted, Almora didn't have a banner year in 2014 between high Class A and Double-A -- .270/.291/.392/.683 -- but the 2012 first-round pick (sixth overall) is refusing to call his '14 campaign a lost year, per ESPN.

“To be honest with you, I didn’t have bad year,” Almora said Tuesday. “I thought it was a great year when it comes down to how to deal with stuff. I learned a lot of things. I was happy with the outcome of the year. Sure the numbers weren’t there like previous years, but when it comes to my development, I thought it was a great year.”

Almora drew just 14 walks in 125 games last season. He admits one area he needs to improve is pitch recognition.

“Getting my pitch to hit. It (walking more) would help my game out tremendously," he said. "I definitely think it’s part of the game I need to work on. If I’m on base it helps the team.”

The remaining invites are Mike Baxter, Adron Chambers, Jonathan Herrera, Chris Valaika, Logan Watkins, Taylor Teagarden, Daniel Bard, Corey Black, Francisley Bueno, Anthony Carter, Hunter Cervenka, Jorge De Leon, Pierce Johnson, Armando Rivero and Donn Roach.

Albert Almora promoted to Double-A

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(7/23/14) Cubs outfield prospect Albert Almora has been promoted from Class A Daytona to Double-A Tennessee. Almora is considered the Cubs' fourth-best prospect by MLB.com.

Almora hit .283 with a .306 on-base percentage, .406 slugging percentage and .712 OPS in the hitter-friendly Florida State League. He totaled two triples, seven home runs, 20 doubles, 50 RBI, 55 runs and six stolen bases in 89 games.

He was much improved in the second half of the season, batting .354 with two triples, five home runs, seven doubles, 20 RBI and 27 runs in 30 games after the FSL All-Star break.
