Astros RP Will Harris still has unblemished ERA through 10 outings

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/4/15) Astros reliever Will Harris continues to be stellar out of the Houston bullpen to begin the 2015 season. He struck out the side in the ninth inning of an 11-4 win Saturday against the Mariners and has still not allowed a run in 13 innings (10 outings) this season.

The right-hander has allowed just two hits and four walks, while recording 17 strikeouts. He is striking out a career-best 11.8 batters per nine innings. His previous high was 10.9 in 2014 with the Diamondbacks.

Astros not ready to activate Josh Fields with Will Harris excelling

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(4/15/15) The Astros are not ready to activate Josh Fields from the disabled list and have no obvious candidates for demotion, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Right-hander Will Harris would be the logical option to lose his roster spot in the event of a Fields activation, but the right-hander has surrendered just one hit in five scoreless innings while striking out five and walking none in three appearances.

"Will Harris has been one of our best relievers," manager A.J. Hinch said. "He’s done very well in his opportunity and we like what he’s done."

The Astros are also looking to give Fields a few more opportunites to get comfortable in rehab games.

"Little bit of both," Hinch said. "You want to make sure he’s fully comfortable and his pitches both have quality and comfort for him. I think it could happen quickly. It also could be a couple more outings."

Astros relief pitcher Will Harris earns first win of the year Sunday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(4/12/15) Astros relief pitcher Will Harris worked a perfect two innings in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Rangers in 14 innings. Harris came on in the 12th and struck out the side on 14 pitches.

He needed just 11 to get through the 13th, sending Texas down in order again. He kept his perfect 0.00 ERA.

Jake Marisnick, Jonathan Villar, Will Harris crack Astros' roster

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(4/1/15) Astros outfielder Jake Marisnick, utility man Jonathan Villar and pitcher Will Harris have all been informed they will break camp with the big-league club, according to the Houston Chronicle.

It will be the first time Marisnick has cracked the Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old hit .306/.395/.500 this spring and is a candidate to play regularly at center field.

"It's going to feel like Christmas," Marisnick said.

Villar, 23, batted .209 during his second season in the majors in 2014. This spring, he slashed .256/.356/.436 over 39 at-bats.

"He's made some of the most spectacular plays of the spring, both in the outfield and in the infield," general manager Jeff Luhnow said of Villar. "It's a great story."

Harris, 30, will join Houston's bullpen this season after posting a 4.34 ERA last season with the Diamondbacks. He registered a 2.45 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and 5:2 K:BB ratio over 11 innings this spring.

Hinch: Astros 'likely' to use seven-man bullpen in 2015

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/3/15) Astros manager A.J. Hinch indicated that the team is likely to use a seven-man bullpen this season, leaving two spots open for competition this spring, the Houston Chronicle reports.

"Likely," Hinch said of a seven-man bullpen. "There’s always a chance that (changes) depending on how the schedule plays out, and there’s always a debate on how many pitchers to carry during interleague. Now interleague is pretty much year round, so I mean, in a perfect world with our roster, it’s likely to carry a seven-man ‘pen. If we feel like we need an extra pitcher or injury happens, there’s different ways to shape our roster, then we will, but likely 12."

The two open spots will likely be filled by a left-handed pitcher and a long reliever. The competition for the second lefty in the pen likely comes down to Kevin Chapman and nonroster invitees Joe Thatcher and Darin Downs. The long relief role has a broader list of candidates, including Alex White and Asher Wojciechowski, who will prepare both as starters and relievers.

"We’re going to stretch out a lot of our guys," Hinch said. "Some of them are because they’re competing in that fifth starter spot, some of them are bullpen guys. Will Harris is going to throw multiple innings. Obviously (Sam) Deduno has been a starter in the past, he’s in a competition for the fifth man spot. Wojo, White, those guys are going to need to, going to plan for the season on both fronts, whether it’s a starter or reliever. But we’re preaching multiple innings. It’s important if you have a seven-man bullpen that you have a couple of guys that can get four, five, six outs if needed and be a bridge to the rest of the bullpen."
