Astros SP Collin McHugh records seven strikeouts Tuesday

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/24/15) Astros starting pitcher Collin McHugh racked up seven strikeouts in five innings during Tuesday's spring game against the Mets. He allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and one walk.

McHugh gave up a two-run homer to David Wright in the third inning. He now has 4.96 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings.

"I wanted to get the pitch count up," McHugh said to MLB.com. "We got up over 75 pitches, which is good. I probably have one more start -- maybe one of the exhibition games [in Houston] -- to get back up to that 100 plateau by the time the season starts. Getting five innings under my belt, getting through a lineup 2 1/2 times were all things I haven't done yet this spring. It's a good progression so far."

Astros' McHugh allows two solo HRs in second spring loss

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/19/15) Astros starting pitcher Collin McHugh allowed just two runs in four innings Thursday against the Mets, but he still dropped to 0-2 during a 3-1 loss. McHugh allowed four hits and no walks, while striking out three.

McHugh, who threw 43 of 62 pitches for strikes, gave up solo home runs to Michael Cuddyer in the second inning and Curtis Granderson in the fourth inning.

“I feel much better today,” McHugh said, per the Houston Chronicle. “I feel like all my pitches were there to an extent. I did some good things out there today.

“I worked on my breaking ball, got it a little bit tighter, a little bit sharper at times and was able to execute some pitches that I’ve had trouble with earlier in the spring. We’re working our way toward the season, definitely making some good changes and getting some momentum.”

McHugh has a 5.56 ERA through four spring starts. He has 12 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings.

“I feel like I’m getting a little bit better, working on refining things a little bit more each outing,” he said. “I think with two or three more outings left to go I think we’re making good progress. …

“When you got out and you’re pumping the zone full of strikes with all your pitches you got to feel good about it. That’s what we’re doing today. That’s what we’re working on.”

Astros' Hinch announces rotation plans for Feldman, McHugh

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/18/15) Astros manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday starting pitcher Scott Feldman will start the second game of the season on April 8 against the Indians, per the Houston Chronicle. He also added Collin McHugh will also start the third or fourth game.

“Feldman’s lined up to pitch right behind (Dallas) Keuchel, which is good,” Hinch said. “And then somewhere in the third or fourth game you’ll see Collin McHugh. We got to sort out some health (issues) and some competition for the other guys.

"I caution lining it too perfectly too early just because a lot of things can happen, but Keuchel one, Feldman two is a good lineup.”

Astros SP Collin McHugh happy with fast start to spring schedule

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/9/15) Astros starting pitcher Collin McHugh had another strong spring outing Monday against the Blue Jays. After tossing two scoreless innings in his spring debut, McHugh bounced back for three more scoreless innings Monday.

The right-handed allowed three hits and one walk, while striking out three. He has six strikeouts through five spring innings.

“If you’ve seen my spring training numbers, you would know that’s not the (typical) case,” McHugh said, per the Houston Chronicle. “I’m usually a very slow starter. It’s good to get a couple of solid outings under my belt.

“Better than expected. The body gets a little bit tired (sometimes in spring). You’ve gone at it every day in spring training. To recover as well as I did and on one less day rest than usual, even though I only threw two innings last time -- it feels good to get back in the swing of things.”

Astros' McHugh strikes out three in two innings during spring debut

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/5/15) Astros starting pitcher Collin McHugh was oustanding in his spring debut Thursday against the Phillies. The right-hander tossed two scoreless innings, allowing just one walk.

He also had strikeouts of Domonic Brown, Cody Asche and Aaron Altherr.

“I think there are a couple things that I want to do,” McHugh said, per the Houston Chronicle. “Obviously, I’d like to develop my changeup a little bit more, figure out where to throw it in counts a little bit better. But overall, just kind of you work through your routine.

“Then, whatever the game kind of throws at you, you make adjustments as you need to. Today I threw a more cutters ’cause they had four lefties in there in the first six hitters. If they had more righties, I’d probably throw more curveballs. You see what the lineup gives you and you go from there.”
