Astros SP Collin McHugh allows nine hits in Friday's loss

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(5/22/15) Astros pitcher Collin McHugh surrendered a season-high nine hits over seven innings of work during Friday's 6-2 loss to the Tigers.

"I was pretty bad," he said, per MLB.com. "I was pretty bad with the fastball command. Too many cutters. Too many hard-hit balls. I was behind too many batters. They had nine hits in seven innings. Every mistake I made, they were hitting hard. No, I didn't feel very good about it."

The nine hits led to three runs, which all came on a home run by J.D. Martinez in the third inning. McHugh has pitched at least seven innings in five of his last seven starts. His ERA now stands at 3.43.

"I thought McHugh battled tonight," manager A.J. Hinch said. "He made one or two mistakes. It seemed like every mistake was hit with some authority. They worked him the other way, obviously the big blow from Martinez with the home run in that inning, and they tacked on a few more runs [in the eighth inning]. For McHugh, seven innings, three runs, it was a matter of one swing that took a lot out of his night."

His next expected start is scheduled for Wednesday at Baltimore.

Astros pitcher Collin McHugh strikes out nine in win on Sunday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/17/15) Astros pitcher Collin McHugh allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings of work in Houston's 4-2 win over the Blue Jays on Sunday.

McHugh worked efficiently through the first two innings. Then in the third, McHugh surrendered a lead off double to Steve Tolleson, who was sacrificed to third before Jose Bautista hit a sac fly to left to bring home a run. Then in the fourth, McHugh gave up another run on a second sac fly, this time via Ryan Goins.

"It was tough from the get-go," McHugh said to MLB.com. "I felt like they had guys on base every inning. But overall we battled today."

McHugh, now 5-1, moved his ERA to 3.38 in 50 2/3 innings of work. He will look to keep rolling Friday against the Tigers.

"That leadoff batter, we had a hard time getting them out in the early part of the game," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "But [McHugh] missed bats when he needed to, and he managed innings the way you're supposed to when you're controlling damage.

"A really effective outing with all his pitches working at different times of the game. I was impressed with his perseverance through the traffic."

Astros' Collin McHugh gets roughed up in loss to Giants

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/12/15) Astros pitcher Collin McHugh took a step back with a rough outing, suffering his first loss of the season Tuesday night against San Francisco.

McHugh (4-1) allowed a bases-clearing double to Matt Duffy in the second inning and was charged with four unearned runs in the fifth. He yielded seven runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over 4 2/3 innings of work in an 8-1 defeat. Of his 91 pitches, 55 were strikes.

McHugh has allowed 13 runs -- nine earned -- over his last three starts (19 innings). He will look to get back on track Sunday afternoon at home against Toronto.

Astros SP Collin McHugh receives no-decision Thursday

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(5/8/15) While Astros pitcher Collin McHugh gave his team more than seven solid innings of work Thursday, he received a no-decision during the 3-2 win over the Angels.

McHugh surrendered two runs on five hits over 7 1/3 innings. He struck out seven batters and walked one. His biggest mistake was a solo home run given up to Mike Trout in the first inning.

He lowered his ERA from 3.41 to 3.23. McHugh (4-0) has pitched at least seven innings in three of his last four starts.

His next expected start is scheduled for Wednesday against the Giants.

Astros pitcher Collin McHugh moves to 4-0 with win Saturday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/2/15) Astros pitcher Collin McHugh allowed four runs on six hits, including four home runs, in Houston's 11-4 win over the Mariners Saturday.

McHugh's biggest rough patch came in the second inning when he allowed three solo shots to Nelson Cruz, Logan Morrison and Mike Zunino. Then in the sixth, Cruz got ahold of another one, his league-leading 13th of the season. But McHugh was able to limit the damage and add three strikeouts to his totals.

"It helps when your team scores 11," McHugh said per the Associated Press. "Our guys did an unbelievable job. Every time they threw a punch, our guys came back and counter-punched and even more. It makes it a little bit easier, breathe a little easier after the guys put you back on top."

McHugh, who moves to 4-0 with the win, moved his ERA to 3.41 and will look to keep rolling Thursday against the Angels.
