|Paco Rodriguez records second career save |
|by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com|
(8/5/13) Dodgers reliever Paco Rodriguez pitched the final two innings Monday in St. Louis to earn his second save of the season and his career. Rodriguez struck out a batter over 16 pitches in two perfect frames.
Lowering his ERA to 2.25 on the season, the 22-year-old Rodriguez has allowed just one earned run over his last 10 appearances.

(6/26/13) With Brandon League struggling yet again to close out the Giants Tuesday, the Dodgers turned to Paco Rodriguez for his first save opportunity.
Rodriguez entered the game with a one-run lead and a runner on first, and allowed a leadoff single to open the ninth inning. He shut down the Giants' rally from that point on, retiring the next three batters to preserve a 6-5 win.
Rodriguez has a 2.93 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings. He is not expected to receive save opportunities moving forward, as Kenley Jansen was off Tuesday after working three nights in a row.

(5/11/13) The Dodgers' shaky bullpen might open up an opportunity for reliever Paco Rodriguez to earn some more high-leverage opportunities, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"The way Paco is going, he's getting righties and lefties out, he's a guy we’re really going to have to take a look (at),” manager Don Mattingly said. "It's hard to stay status quo, but you kind of want to stick with your plan and to your guns."
The Dodgers have lost eight games in a row, five of them by one run or less, but Rodriguez has not been a part of the problem. Rodriguez has not allowed a run in his last five outings, with 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings, prompting Mattingly to consider a change in his role. Mattingly thinks Rodriguez would have earned more opportunities, even if the other options hadn't flopped recently.
"You hate to just jump ship on that and give up on guys. That wouldn’t be giving up on guys, just him making enough noise to say, 'Hey, I can pitch back here and get both guys out,'" Mattingly said. "He's working his way more and more really to that role."
|Dodgers call up rookie Rodriguez |
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
(9/5/12) The Dodgers have called up reliever Steven Rodriguez from Double-A Chattanooga Wednesday, according to MLB.com. Rodriguez is the first player from this year's amateur draft to be called up to the majors. He was selected in the second round out of the University of Florida. The left-hander posted a 0.92 ERA in 21 appearances in the minors this season while striking out 32 and walking six in 19 2/3 innings.
|It hasn't taken Paco Rodriguez very long to make a name for himself in the majors. The 2012 second-round pick made his MLB debut months after being drafted, and he didn't slow down in his first full season in the majors in 2013. The left-handed hurler, who will turn 23 in mid-April, went 3-4 with a 2.32 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in 76 relief appearances. He also struck out 63 batters in 54 1/3 innings and was second on the team in holds with 20. Through his first 87 MLB appearances, Rodriguez has a 2.21 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and is striking out 10.2 batters per nine innings. Rodriguez might eventually develop into an MLB closer, but his current role is as a left-handed setup man. He's best used in Rotisserie formats and leagues that reward for holds.
