Preseason Outlook

Byrnes, who was a lost cause in 2008 because of injuries to both hamstrings, wasn't any better last year. Playing a part-time role, he hit only .226, making his batting average .218 over his last 445 at-bats. At age 34, Byrnes stands little chance of reversing his downward spiral. Why else would the Diamondbacks give up on him? His 20-homer, 50-steal 2007 season is the only reason you would draft him, and that is nothing more than a distant memory at this stage of his career. He is nothing more than a reserve outfielder in our view. Consider him a sleeper for AL-only or NL-only leagues in the right situation, but he is not guaranteed to find a spot on an opening day roster at this point. (Updated 1/20/10)
