|Vic Black comes off minor-league DL |
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(4/12/14) Mets reliever Vic Black was able to pitch Friday for Triple-A Las Vegas, after coming off the disabled list with a neck injury. He struck out two batters and walked one in a scoreless inning in his first game back.
Black was on the DL for just a few days due to a pinched nerve, and could pitch his way to the majors at some point this season. He posted a 3.71 ERA in 18 appearances with the Pirates and Mets last year.

(4/7/14) Mets reliever Vic Black has landed on the disabled list at Triple-A Las Vegas with a pinched nerve in his neck, per ESPN. However, the injury is considered minor.
Black resumed throwing Sunday and should be activated from the DL later this week. However, the injury is not being linked to Black's control issues this spring.

(3/26/14) A disappointing spring has motivated the Mets to option right-handed reliever Vic Black to the minors.
Black earned minor league all-star spots in both of the last two seasons, during which time he struck out 148 batters in 106 2/3 innings. The Mets were hopeful that the 25-year-old Black would take the next step up this year, but he will not break camp with the team.

(9/26/13) Mets manager Terry Collins told ESPN.com that Vic Black will be used in a save situation, should one arise, in Thursday's game against the Brewers.
The team's regular closer, LaTroy Hawkins, will be unavailable, as he threw 19 pitches in Wednesday's win over the Reds.

(9/24/13) Mets reliever Vic Black nailed down his first career save Tuesday night against the Reds. Black needed only 14 pitches as he struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to preserve a 4-2 victory. He owns a 3.60 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP in 15 innings pitched this season.
2014 team preview: New York Mets
It's time to hit on the New York Mets as we shuffle through all 30 team previews leading up to the Major League Baseball season.
|After developing into one of the Pirates' best relief prospects and a potential future major-league closer, Vic Black probably deserved to be more than the "player to be named later" in the Marlon Byrd/John Buck trade with the Mets last summer. Nonetheless, the Mets could end up with a steal if Black reaches his full potential. Black posted a 1.65 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 13 saves and a 12.8 K/9 rate at Double-A in 2012 and a 2.51 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 17 saves and 12.2 K/9 rate at Triple-A in 2013. Control issues forced the Pirates to convert the hard-throwing right-hander from a starter to reliever early in his pro career. He still battles a high walk rate, but the 2009 first-round pick was pretty clutch down the stretch for the Mets in 2013. He racked up three relief wins, one save and four holds in 15 relief appearances following the trade. Black could be the fallback option for saves if something happens to closer Bobby Parnell. Initially, however, Black is just a Fantasy option in leagues that reward for holds.
