(4/15/13) The Pirates optioned pitcher Phil Irwin back to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday after making a spot start in Sunday's game against Cincinnati. Irwin permitted five runs -- four earned -- in 4 2/3 innings to take a no-decision during his major-league debut.

(4/14/13) Phil Irwin allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings in his major league debut for the Pirates Sunday against Cincinnati.
Irwin has tremendous minor league numbers -- a 3.00 ERA and a K/BB over 5.0 -- but struggled Sunday. His four walks was the highest in his professional career. However, he recovered nicely from allowing his first four opponents to reach base (two runs scored) and he threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings to close the start.
Irwin's hold on a rotation spot will likely depend on Wandy Rodriguez's health going forward.

(4/14/13) The Pirates have recalled starting pitcher Phil Irwin, the club announced Sunday.
Irwin will get the start for the Pirates Sunday against Cincinnati. Irwin has sterling minor-league numbers, including a 3.00 ERA and 5.1 K/BB over 419 2/3 career innings across all levels.

(4/13/13) The Pirates are expected to recall Phil Irwin from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Sunday's game against Cincinnati in place of Wandy Rodriguez (hamstring), the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Irwin, 26, worked six innings during his season debut with Indianapolis, permitting just a run and four hits with five strikeouts.

(3/18/13) The Pittsburgh Pirates pared down their roster Monday, optioning pitcher Phil Irwin to Triple-A Indianapolis. Irwin was considered a darkhorse candidate to replace Francisco Liriano in the starting rotation in case the ailing left-hander was not ready for opening day.
The Pirates also reassigned pitchers Gerrit Cole, Brooks Brown, Kris Johnson, Kyle Waldrop and catcher Ali Solis to their minor-league camp. Cole, 22, is viewed as the team's top prospect and posted a 3.60 ERA with seven strikeouts in three games (two starts) this spring. The right-hander sped through the minors last season and could make his MLB debut later this year.
