Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright ready to fill in any role given
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(3/22/15) Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright has no defined role yet on Boston's pitching staff. But it's not slowing down the knuckleballer from pitching well this spring. Wright was slotted into the starting role Sunday after Joe Kelly was scratched with a biceps injury.
Wright went four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and adding two strikeouts.
"He continues to get outs," said manager John Farrell. "There was a little bit of a stretch where he lost his release point for about seven or eight pitches, but I thought he threw a number of real quality knuckleballs today. And it's not hard to envision him pitching quality innings for us at some point this year."
Farrell said Wright will continue to be utilized as a starter for the time being, but his role can change.
"My goal is just to go out there and throw strikes," said Wright. "As far as starting, relieving, honestly it doesn't matter to me. My goal is to be ready whenever they call. If it's a start, I'm ready. If it's out of the 'pen, I'm ready. For me, I just try to make sure every day I come to the park, I come ready to pitch."
Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright providing depth to starting rotation
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(3/16/15) Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright may be a fill in starter for the club when the season begins. After Joe Kelly left a game with biceps tightness, Wright filled in with three scoreless innings. Manager John Farrell thinks he will help ease the pressure of having enough depth, reports MLB.com.
"Steven Wright is a guy that in my mind gives us a lot of comfort," Farrell said before Monday's game. "As that knuckleball has come along, he's thrown a lot more strikes. He's got the ability to give a contrast of styles. So we feel like the depth starters that project to be in Pawtucket give us is what we're looking for."
Wright feels he's in a lot better position than he was a year ago.
"It's good, especially compared to where I was last year at this point," Wright said. "I was just trying to get healthy. So for me, I just come in and basically do what I know I can do, which is try to throw quality knuckleballs over the plate, and then whatever the team needs me to do, I'm more than happy to do it. I need to stay healthy."

|(9/23/14) Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright will start the opener of the final series of the season Friday when the Yankees come to town, WEEI.com reports.
Wright was likely to earn the nod after the team shuffled the rotation Sunday, but the Red Sox made it official Tuesday. He owns a 3.38 ERA and 18:2 K:BB ratio in 16 innings over five relief outings.

|(9/21/14) WEEI.com reports that Brandon Workman and Rubby De La Rosa have been removed from the Red Sox's rotation for the final week of the season. Clay Buchholz, Anthony Ranaudo and Allen Webster are set to make starts against the Rays, and then Joe Kelly and Buchholz will start the last two games of the team's season-ending series against the Yankees.
Friday's starter in the series opener against the Yankees is still to be named, but Steven Wright is a candidate to get the nod. Wright has posted a 3.38 ERA in five relief appearances this season.
