| Doubts over Hyun-Jin Ryu dissipating |
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer (5/1/13) Maybe I'm just getting suckered by the small sample, but considering it's the only sample we have any context for, I'm buying into everything the Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu is doing.
It's all about the strikeout-to-walk ratio. The closest comparison we have to the Korean league is probably the Japanese league, and pitchers who transition from there often struggle with command. But Ryu has been a strike-throwing machine, issuing just 2.4 walks per nine innings. And with all the strikeouts he's getting, his early success hardly seems like beginner's luck.
Of course, track record still counts for something, so I'm not slotting Ryu alongside Max Scherzer yet, but I have moved him up to 44th at starting pitcher, ahead of Marco Estrada, A.J. Burnett and Wade Miley.

| Hyun-Jin Ryu Ks 12 for third win |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (5/1/13) Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu continued to rack up the strikeouts in his outing against the Rockies Tuesday night. He allowed two runs on three hits over six inningsof the 6-2 win. The left-hander also struck out 12 and walked two.
Ryu surrendered a solo home run to Carlos Gonzalez in the first before making it through the next four innings unscathed. He also allowed an RBI double to Michael Cuddyer in the sixth.
The 26-year-old threw 74 of his 105 pitches for strikes to earn his third win. He has 46 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings.
His next start is Monday against the Diamondbacks. When Ryu faced Arizona April 13, he allowed three runs in six innings in the win.

| If you think assessing pitchers who come over from Japan is difficult, good luck trying to get a read on Hyun-Jin Ryu, who will be the first player from the eight-team Korea Baseball Organization to go directly to the major leagues. And, yes, he will go directly to the major leagues. Even if, after taking a look at him this spring, the Dodgers decide he needs more work, they can't send him to the minors without his consent. It's one of the many details in his six-year, $36 million contract. By leaving themselves so vulnerable, the Dodgers must have some level of confidence in Ryu's ability, but who knows? General manager Ned Colleti agreed to the deal without even seeing the left-hander pitch. What little we do know about Ryu is that he has a fastball that sits in the low-90s -- not bad for a left-hander -- and an excellent changeup. The complete package, according to limited scouting reports, is something in the neighborhood of a No. 3 starter, but given the number of variables that could influence his performance, defining him in such terms is probably pointless. A fair expectation for Ryu is something like what Wei-Yin Chen did last year. The allure of the unknown might make him a middle-rounder on Draft Day, but you're better off waiting until the late rounds to take him. (Updated 1/9/13) |
