Rockies option Tommy Kahnle
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(3/25/15) The Rockies have optioned pitcher Tommy Kahnle, reducing the major-league camp roster to 40 players, MLB.com reports.
Kahnle put together a quality spring performance, allowing one earned run in 4 1/3 innings while striking out six. He spent 2014 on the team's major-league roster after being chosen in the Rule 5 draft and delivered a 4.19 ERA and 63:31 K:BB ratio in 68 2/3 innings during his rookie campaign.
Rockies pitcher Tommy Kahnle mows down lefties Saturday
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(3/15/15) Rockies pitcher Tommy Kahnle could be a force in the bullpen this season. Kahnle threw one inning Saturday against the Reds, facing exclusively left-handed hitters, and sent them down in order. Manager Walt Weiss was extremely pleased with the results, reports MLB.com.
"It's a great mix with the velocity that he has, then that separation between the two pitchers and action of that changeup," Weiss said.
Kahnle held left-handed hitters to just .184 average in 2014 with 33 strikeouts.
"I faced three lefties, and the slider is not a big pitch against them," Kahnle said. "I will show it every once in a while. But mainly, I'm going to be sticking with fastball-changeup and I'll show a slider. But I'm working on the slider against righties.
Rockies' Weiss: Tommy Kahnle 'had a tremendous year for us'
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(2/24/15) Rockies manager Walt Weiss indicated Tuesday that relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle has things to work on this spring but acknowledged the pitcher's "tremendous year" after being selected as a Rule 5 pick before the 2014 season, MLB.com reports.
"Some things we're trying to tweak -- controlling the running game and some of the finer points of the game," Weiss said. "But as far as the physical ability, he had a tremendous year for us. We threw a lot at him."
Kahnle, who is working on a slider this spring, realizes that his success in 2014 doesn't guarantee him a spot in the bullpen on opening day.
"Nothing is given," Kahnle said. "I have to go into this spring the same way I prepared for the last one."
Kahnle went 2-1 with a 4.19 ERA and 63:31 K:BB ratio in 68 2/3 innings last season.
