Yankees option Bryan Mitchell, Ramon Flores

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/29/15) The Yankees optioned pitcher Bryan Mitchell and outfielder Ramon Flores to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Sunday while reassigning eight players to minor-league camp.

Mitchell allowed six earned runs in 7 1/3 innings this spring. Flores hit .206/.270/.412 with two home runs in 34 spring at-bats.

In addition to the options, the Yankees reassigned catchers Francisco Arcia and Kyle Higashioka, infielders Cole Figueroa and Jonathan Galvez, outfielder Slade Heathcott and pitchers Kyle Davies, Jacob Lindgren and Nick Rumbelow to minor-league camp.

Cashman: Adam Warren the favorite to win final spot in rotation

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/25/15) Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday pitcher Adam Warren is the favorite to win the final spot in the team's rotation, per MLB.com. Cashman indicated Warren has a huge lead in the race over the remaining candidates -- Esmil Rogers, Bryan Mitchell, Chase Whitley and Scott Baker.

"There is a Secretariat in the field," Cashman said, per the New York Post. "Right now, Warren’s got a big lead in this, but we don’t have to make that decision right now. As of right now, if we made the call today, it would be Warren."

Warren is 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA through four spring starts. He has allowed four runs on 13 hits and no walks in 13 innings, while striking out six.

Yankees' Bryan Mitchell walks three in 3 1/3 innings Monday

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/23/15) Yankees pitcher Bryan Mitchell, who is vying for the last spot in the team's rotation, didn't exactly make a strong impression during Monday's spring game against the Nationals. Mitchell lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out two.

"This is a young man with good stuff," manager Joe Girardi said, per ESPN. "It's learning how to pound the strike zone with that good stuff and learning how to put guys away that is going to be a factor for him. I think this kid's got a pretty high ceiling, I do. There’s stuff there."

Mitchell, who was making his second start and third spring appearance, has allowed six runs in his last two outings (5 1/3 innings). Mitchell has a 7.36 ERA.

"It kinda coulda been better, coulda been worse," Mitchell said. "I feel like I've thrown the ball well, but the results haven’t shown it, but I feel it’s a matter of time before things start clicking."

Yankees' Girardi: Fifth-starter competition 'is on'

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/18/15) Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Wednesday that the competition for the fifth starting spot in the rotation begins in earnest with this trip through the rotation, MLB.com reports.

"The competition is on now, in a sense," Girardi said. "These guys are competing for jobs. Even though they probably felt they already were before, this is when we're really going to start paying attention to it."

Esmil Rogers is scheduled to take the mound Thursday against the Phillies, while Adam Warren is slated to make his case Friday against the Tigers. Girardi added that he expects Bryan Mitchell to get at least one more start but was less commital on Chase Whitley or Scott Baker getting another look in the rotation.

Bryan Mitchell would be disappointed if he doesn't make Yanks roster

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/23/15) Yankees pitcher Bryan Mitchell has just three major-league appearances on his resume, but the 23-year-old right-hander said he would be disappointed if he did not make the opening day roster, per NJ.com.

"I'm here because I want to make the team," he said. "So, if that happens, I'll just go back down (to the minors) and pitch my butt off and come back."

Barring injury, the Yankees rotation seems pretty set, so Mitchell could be vying for a role as a long reliever/sixth starter this spring.

"I try not to read too much into that," he said. "But at the same time I know there is going to be spots up for grabs, whether it be reliever or sixth starter or long man. Just trying to win a job wherever I can."
