Dodgers' Mattingly not expecting Seager callup before September

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/19/15) Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said barring any injuries on the major-league roster, he doesn't expect to see shortstop Corey Seager -- who is considered the team's top prospect by Baseball America -- in the majors before September, per the Los Angeles Times.

Seager, who was reassigned to minor-league camp Wednesday, hit .333 (4 for 12) in 12 spring games. He also had two doubles, four RBI, five runs, six walks and five strikeouts.

Dodgers option Scott Schebler, re-assign Corey Seager

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/18/15) The Dodgers optioned outfielder Scott Schebler after Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Cubs, the team announced.

Schebler went 0 for 2 in Wednesday's game, leaving him 8 for 20 with two home runs and six RBI in his second major-league spring stint. He's excelled with the bat during the last two seasons, including hitting .280/.365/.556 with 28 home runs, 73 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 489 at-bats with Double-A Chattanooga last season.

The team also re-assigned five players to minor-league camp Wednesday, including top infield prospect Corey Seager. Catchers Chris O'Brien and Shawn Zarraga as well as infielders Buck Britton and Darnell Sweeney were also sent to minor-league camp Wednesday.

Dodgers' Don Mattingly confident in SS Corey Seager

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3/9/15) If needed, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly would be OK with playing young shortstop Corey Seager , according to the Orange County Register.

“Do I think he’s ready [to play at the major league level]?” Mattingly said. “I wouldn’t be afraid of [playing] him, I’ll tell you that.”

Center fielder Joc Pederson and pitcher Julio Urias have generated the most buzz among the up-and-coming prospects. However, Seager has performed well in his own right. He's hit 3-for-8 in Cactus League play and has drawn four walks.

“With Corey, there’s really nothing not to like. He looks comfortable in the [batter’s] box," Mattingly said. "He looks comfortable on the field. He looks comfortable with our guys in the clubhouse. He seems to be handling everything about big league camp.”

Dodgers' Mattingly: Corey Seager profiles as big SS like Ripken

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/9/15) Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Monday that infield prospect Corey Seager has a swing like John Olerud and profiles as a big shortstop like Cal Ripken, MLB.com reports.

"The whole package has been good," Mattingly said. "He has a chance to be special."

Seager was rated as the No. 5 overall prospect by Baseball America this offseason. A first-round pick in 2012, Seager hit .349/.402/.602 with 20 home runs, 97 RBI and six stolen bases in 475 at-bats with high Class A Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Chattanooga in 2014. The team added Jimmy Rollins to play shortstop, making sure Seager wouldn't be pushed before he was ready to play every day in the majors.

"Talking to Andrew [Friedman, president], we want to give them the best chance to develop so it's not a back-and-forth thing [to the Minor Leagues]," Mattingly said. "They all like to get here quick, but you run the risk of cutting corners and that can set a guy back."

Report: Dodgers may trade top prospect for nonrental

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/30/14) The Dodgers "haven't flat out said no" to trading one of their top three prospects for a player, as long as that player isn't due to be a free agent after the season, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Previous reports have said that outfielder Joc Pederson, third baseman Corey Seager and pitcher Julio Urias were off the table in trade talks, but that only applies to a rental like Jon Lester. The Phillies and Rays may be able to get the Dodgers to part with at least one of the team's top prospects in a deal for Cole Hamels or David Price, respectively, though neither trade has been reported to be in the works.
