Blue Jays' Roberto Osuna impressing in rookie season

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/14/15) Blue Jays pitcher Roberto Osuna has been excellent in his first taste of major-league action, posting a 0.98 ERA and 18:5 K:BB ratio in 18 1/3 innings across 14 appearances.

"He’s been impressive since day one, very composed," pitching coach Pete Walker said, per the Toronto Sun. "His mound presence looks like he’s been here for a while doing this, very comfortable in a good way. He attacks the strike zone and is not afraid of any situation. So far he hasn’t backed down from any situation that we’ve put him into. He’s been a real pleasant surprise and out expectations are for him to continue to be really productive up here."

The organization believes the young pitcher could serve as a starter or closer long-term.

"I think he could turn into being a starter right now and be fine," manager John Gibbons said. "Generally starters have three (quality) pitches and he has them so he’s ahead of the game."

Blue Jays' Gibbons credits addition of changeup to Osuna's success

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/1/15) Blue Jays rookie reliever Roberto Osuna bounced back from his first blown save of the season Monday at Boston to throw 1 2/3 scoreless innings in a 5-1 win Thursday against the Indians. He allowed one hit and had two strikeouts.

The right-hander has been a strong addition to the Toronto bullpen. He lowered his ERA to 1.38 and has 15 strikeouts in 13 innings. Manager John Gibbons credits Osuna's success to his increase in changeup usage, which he said was inspired by catcher Russell Martin.

"He's been great all year," Gibbons said of Osuna, per MLB.com. "For a young kid, he's very poised and has a lot of confidence. You could really start to see in spring training when Russell took over with him and really made him use his changeup a lot. That's really made a big difference in his career to this point. Coming into this year, he was basically fastball/slider. Russ just really made him use it in spring training and it's a big pitch for him. So now he's got three pitches he can go to."

Brett Cecil back in closer's role for Blue Jays

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/28/15) Blue Jays reliever Brett Cecil is returning to the closer's role, manager John Gibbons announced Thursday. Gibbons added Aaron Loup and Roberto Osuna will serve as the primary setup relievers.

Cecil was removed as the team's closer April 9 after a rocky start to the season. Rookie Miguel Castro was elevated to the closer's role after Cecil was removed from the ninth-inning responsibilities.

Castro initially thrived in the closer's role before running into his own issues. He is 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA, two saves and two blown saves in his last five outings. Gibbons said he will use Castro in low-leverage situations to help get him back on track.

Blue Jays' Gibbons continue to show confidence in Castro, Osuna

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/28/15) Blue Jays rookie relievers Miguel Castro and Roberto Osuna have both endured some struggles as of late

Castro suffered his second loss of the season Monday against the Red Sox, which came two days after he suffered his second blown save. He has allowed at least one run in four of his last five appearances.

Osuna has allowed one run in two straight appearances and suffered his first blown save Monday.

"[Castro has] had a couple of tough ones," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said after Monday's loss, per MLB.com. "Maybe we'll back him down a little bit. But same way with [Roberto] Osuna, we have confidence in these guys. We're asking a lot out of them, but it's just the way it goes. You find some things out.

"I love both of them, I think they're both going to be great pitchers when it's all said and done, but we're asking a lot out of them, and I'm not sure how fair that is."

It appears Castro might be pitching his way out of save opportunities, as Brett Cecil could return to the closer's role shortly. Still, Gibbons is hoping the 20-year-old Castro can overcome his recent struggles.

"I hope he understands the reason I'm putting him in there is because I have confidence in the kid," Gibbons said. "I also understand how tough it is in the big leagues, and you take your lumps. He's a tough kid, he really is. He's going to be a [heck] of a pitcher."

Castro, Osuna, Cecil unavailable for Blue Jays on Friday

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/10/15) Blue Jays relievers Miguel Castro, Roberto Osuna and Brett Cecil will not be available for Friday's game against the Orioles, according to TSN.ca.

All three pitchers threw at least one inning in Thursday's 6-3 win against the Yankees. Castro finished off the win for his first career save.
