Byron Buxton, Jose Berrios among Twins' nine cuts

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/15/15) The Twins reassigned eight players to minor league camp on Sunday and optioned outfielder Max Kepler to Double-A.

Kepler was one-for-nine in four games this spring.

Jose Berrios and outfielder Byron Buxton were the top names on the list of players reassigned.

Berrios, a first-rounder in the 2012 draft, gave up one unearned run on seven hits in six innings this spring, striking out four.

Buxton, also a 2012 first-rounder, hit .125 in eight at bats.

The Twins also cut catchers Stuart Turner (2-for-4 in spring) and Mitch Garver (0-for-4), RHP Tyler Duffey (no appearances), LHPs Taylor Rogers (no appearances) and Ryan O'Rourke (9.00 ERA in one inning); and infielder Heiker Meneses (.125).

Twins' Jose Berrios strikes out four on Wednesday

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3/4/15) Twins starter Jose Berrios struck out four during his first spring appearance on Wednesday.

Berrios took on the University of Minnesota, and turned in a good showing. While Berrios is a minor-leaguer, he's only 20, and was taking on players his age. Berrios allowed one hit and one unearned run over two innings of work. He struck out four batters.

Berrios is the team's third-best prospect according to Baseball America. He's expected to begin the year in the minors, but could move quickly based on how well he performs.

Twins SP prospect Berrios's top goal is to make opening day roster

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/20/15) Twins starting pitcher prospect Jose Berrios had a breakout campaign in 2014, going 12-8 with a 2.76 ERA in 25 starts. He started the season in high Class A before finishing the year with one start in Triple-A.

Berrios entered last season as a top-100 prospect and did nothing to hurt his reputation. In fact, he might have even boosted it.

Now the 20-year-old right-hander has his mind set on making the Twins' opening day roster.

"My first goal is to play in the big leagues from opening day," he told MLB.com. "That is my first goal -- to play in the major leagues. Then my next goal is to play the season strong and healthy. I want to work hard all of the year."

With the majors on his mind, Berrios is working on adding a two-seam fastball to his repertoire.

"I throw a fastball, changeup, curveball," he said. "My best pitch is a strike. Every pitch I throw for a strike is my best pitch. I want to learn a two-seam fastball this year for 2015. I'm working on that this offseason. I need a pitch for the big hitters in the major leagues. I have a fastball, changeup, curveball, but I need one more pitch to compete with those hitters."

Jose Berrios' final outing in 2014 will be Triple-A spot start

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(8/31/14) Twins starting pitcher prospect Jose Berrios was promoted from Double-A New Britain to Triple-A Rochester to make a spot start Sunday. It is expected to be his final outing of the season.

Berrios is 12-7 with a 2.43 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 24 starts between Class A and Double-A. He also has 137 strikeouts in 137 innings. The top-100 prospect has gone 3-4 with a 3.54 ERA in eight starts since being promoted to Double-A.

Jose Berrios could make next start despite shoulder issue

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(7/30/14) Twins pitching prospect Jose Berrios may not miss a start after coming out of Tuesday's game with shoulder tightness, MLB.com reports.

Berrios was removed for precautionary reasons, and the team still seems likely to skip him in the Double-A rotation if he is still feeling the aftereffects of the tightness in a few days. He owns a 4.58 ERA and 13:6 K:BB ratio with New Britian after an excellent stretch at high Class A Fort Myers.
