Braves' Gonzalez on Wisler: We might see him in majors soon
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(4/6/15) Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez hinted Monday starting pitcher prospect Matt Wisler, who was acquired Sunday in a trade with the Padres, could be close to joining the major-league roster.
"We may see one of those kids up here, Wisler in particular. We may see him up here soon," Gonzalez said, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Wisler was considered the Padres' top prosect by Baseball America before being traded Sunday. Wisler, who is also considered a top-100 prospect by Baseball America (No. 34) and MLB.com (No. 69), is 25-15 with a 3.40 ERA in 396 2/3 innings in the minors.
Padres acquire Craig Kimbrel, Melvin Upton from Braves
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(4/5/15) The Padres and Braves have an agreement in place for a trade that would send closer Craig Kimbrel and outfielder Melvin Upton to San Diego for Cameron Maybin, Carlos Quentin, Matt Wisler, Jordan Paroubeck and the No. 41 overall pick in next year's draft, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. The teams later confirmed the report.
Kimbrel led the league in saves in 2014 with 47 and a 1.61 ERA in 61 2/3 innings pitched. Upton will join his brother, Justin, in San Diego. He hit .208 with 12 home runs and 35 RBI in 519 at-bats in 2014.
The Braves are also expected to designate Quentin for assignment after the trade, according to Heyman. Quentin hit .177 with four home runs and 18 RBI in 130 at-bats in 2014.

|(3/22/15) The Padres optioned pitchers Robbie Erlin and Leonel Campos to Triple-A El Paso and re-assigned shortstop Diego Goris and pitchers Matt Wisler and Jay Jackson to minor-league camp Sunday.
Erlin has started 20 games for the major-league team over the last two seasons. He finishes his spring with two earned runs allowed in six innings. Wisler, who is considered one of the team's top pitching prospects, allowed eight earned runs in five innings over three appearances.
Black: Morrow, Despaigne might have slight edge for No. 5 SP role
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(2/26/15) While Padres manager Bud Black is not ready to put odds on the competition for the final spot in the team's rotation, he did seem to indicate Brandon Morrow and Odrisamer Despaigne might be a little ahead of Robbie Erlin and Matt Wisler , per U-T San Diego.
"I think we're going to look at them all, but Morrow and Despaigne have a little something to them," Black said. "It doesn't hurt Matt to go back to the minors. Robbie Erlin was in our rotation last year, made some starts and pitched well at times. He's still developing. I don't know if there's a front-runner, but you can maybe say that Morrow and Despaigne are out there just a touch."
