D-Backs acquire prospects Guerrero, Reinheimer in trade with M's

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/4/15) As part of the Mark Trumbo-Welington Castillo trade Wednesday, the Diamondbacks acquired prospects Gabby Guerrero and Jack Reinheimer from the Mariners. Guerrero is an outfielder, while Reinheimer is a shortstop.

"[Diamondbacks scout Mike Russell] believes [Reinheimer] is going to be a front-line shortstop," Arizona general manager Dave Stewart said, per MLB.com. "As he put it, he's our kind of guy, he's a hustle guy, he's a high-energy guy.

"We saw [Guerrero] in spring training. He's big, strong-bodied -- we believe he can play center field. His upside is going to be tremendous. This kid is supposed to be a tremendous player in time."

The 21-year-old Guerrero, who is the nephew of former big leaguer Vladimir Guerrero, has a .285/.327/.420/.747 slash line in five seasons in the minors. He hit .307 with 18 home runs, 28 doubles and 96 RBI in 131 games last season at Class A.

The 22-year-old Reinheimer has a .275/.340/.347/.687 slash line in three minor-league seasons. He is batting .277 with one home run, 10 doubles, 16 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 48 games for Double-A Jackson this season.

Diamondbacks trade Mark Trumbo to Mariners in six-player deal

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(6/3/15) The Mariners have acquired outfielder Mark Trumbo and Vidal Nuno from the Diamondbacks for catcher Welington Castillo, pitcher Dominic Leone, infielder Jack Reinheimer and outfielder Gabby Guerrero.

Trumbo is hitting .259/.299/.506 this season. Trumbo figures to add power to a Seattle lineup that has been about average this year as the Mariners have a collective .395 slugging percentage.

"You look where we're at offensively and we're not doing exactly what I thought we'd do or what most people thought we'd do, and Trumbo is a guy that brings an awful lot to the table," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said, per MLB.com. "He's a big power hitter that will bat somewhere in the middle of the lineup and will be very good insurance for the ballclub."

Late last week, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reported the Diamondbacks were potentially interested in dealing Trumbo, who has nine home runs and 23 RBI this season.

Zduriencik said Trumbo can play either corner-outfield spot, as well as designated hitter and first base.

"We'll have a rotation system where he'll get his ABs along with Nelson Cruz and the other corner players," Zduriencik said. "That will still unfold. More than anything else, to bring the bat to this organization is what we're desiring to do."

Mariners P Hisashi Iwakuma hits OF Gabriel Guerrero in batting practice

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3/2/15) Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma was forced to throw a modified batting practice since rain canceled a scheduled intrasquad scrimmage. Iwakuma got his work in by throwing to batters that were not allowed to swing since they were in a confined area.

However, Iwakuma didn't live up to his end of the bargain as he accidentally hit outfielder Gabriel Guerrero with a pitch during the session

“It was a split-finger [fastball] that just kind of slipped out of my finger,” Iwakuma said through interpreter Antony Suzuki, via The News Tribune. “I felt kind of bad for [Guerrero].”

Iwakuma's first scheduled start of spring training is slated for this Saturday against the Diamondbacks.
