Braves' Martin has pitched his way into contention for roster spot
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(3/19/15) Braves pitcher Cody Martin picked up the relief win during Thursday's 6-3 victory against the Marlins. Martin (1-0) tossed three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, while striking out one.
Martin hasn't allowed a run in eight spring innings. He's given up just four hits and four walks, while striking out seven.
After Thursday's game, manager Fredi Gonzalez said Martin is "in the mix" for a spot on the roster -- whether it is in the rotation or bullpen, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
"At this point, you get tired of watching guys throw it up to hit the bull. Throw the ball over the plate. He’s one of those guys who throws the ball over the plate and gets people out. He doesn’t throw 98 (mph), he throws 88, but he gets people out. And he mixes his pitches," Gonzalez said.
Martin, who was a seventh-round pick in 2011, is 26-22 with a 3.07 ERA in 100 career outings (67 starts) in four minor-league seasons.
Braves pitcher Cody Martin in contention for starting job
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(3/8/15) Braves pitcher Cody Martin was already being considered for one of the five spots in Atlanta's starting rotation. But with an injury to Mike Minor, two spots are now open and Martin is being looked at even closer, reports MLB.com.
"He's earned that opportunity and chance," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said."It's wide open. We went from having a fifth spot open to having two spots open. So why not put him in the mix there?"
Martin pitched in Minor's place Sunday, totaling three strikeouts over two scoreless innings.
"My big thing was just to throw strikes and try to get my fastball going," Martin said. "Last year, my command in camp was terrible. I was walking guys in the zone and I was getting hit around. I was like, 'What am I doing?' Looking back, I was just overthrowing. I was coming out of the 'pen thinking I'm going to throw 96 [mph]. Well, I don't throw 96. I'm not going to light up the radar gun, but I am going to hit my spots and throw four pitches for strikes. If you do that, good things can happen."
Jason Hursh, Tommy La Stella headline Braves' non-roster invitees

|(1/13/14) The Braves have invited 22 non-roster players to participate in major-league spring training, highlighted by pitcher Jason Hursh and infielder Tommy La Stella, MLB.com reports.

Graham, Mark Lamm, Cody Martin, Yunesky Maya, Daniel Rodriguez, Gus Schlosser, Atahualpa Severino, Shae Simmons and Ian Thomas; catchers Matt Kennelly, Steven Lerud, Braeden Schlehuber and Jose Yepez; outfielder Matt Lipka; and infielders Mat Gamel, Phil Gosselin, Tyler Greene, Mark Hamilton and Edward Salcedo.
The Braves' first-round pick in the 2013 amateur draft, Hursh allowed two earned runs in 27 innings while striking out 15 and walking 10 at Class A Rome in his first season with the organization.
