Micah Johnson hasn't been on base enough to show White Sox his speed
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(4/19/15) White Sox rookie second baseman Micah Johnson is off to a slow start, hitting .190 and looking shaky in the field.
Manager Robin Ventura plans to leave him on the field, though. "All of it becomes an evaluation mode, especially when a guy, it’s his first time," Ventura said, per the Sun Times. "But you also have to give him a little leeway. It’s his first time going through it, and he has to be able to adjust, and there’s probably a slight over-effort part for him right now of trying to prove things instead of just playing the game. I think he’s better off when he’s just playing the game and he’s not sitting there thinking he has to prove himself."
Johnson also hasn't had the chance to show off his speed, one of the factors that earned him a spot in the lineup to start the season. He had 84 steals in the minor leagues two years ago.
"The opportunities need to be there," Ventura said. "Micah hasn’t really been on as much as you like. You can only do so much with that. You have to have the right opportunities to be able to do it. Do you expect more of those? I would, of them getting on base and being able to steal."
White Sox 2B Emilio Bonifacio in starting lineup Tuesday
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(4/14/15) White Sox second baseman Emilio Bonifacio is in the starting lineup and batting ninth in Tuesday's matchup with the Indians.
It's the first start of the season for Bonifacio, who didn't get a hit in his only at-bat of the season thus far. With Bonifacio in the lineup Tuesday, Micah Johnson is on the bench.
The White Sox are underdogs (+117) in Cleveland Tuesday, per VegasInsider.com.
White Sox's Micah Johnson draws first start against a left-hander
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(4/10/15) White Sox rookie second baseman Micah Johnson was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time this season against a left-handed pitcher. The Twins will have Tommy Milone on the mound against Chicago on Friday.
Johnson will now have started three of the team's first four games. He did not start Wednesday against the Royals, as Carlos Sanchez drew the start against left-hander Danny Duffy. He hit .280 in the minors last season against southpaws. He is hitting .333 (2 for 6) with one double in three games this season.
White Sox rookie Micah Johnson starts two of first three games
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(4/10/15) White Sox rookie second baseman Micah Johnson has started two of the team's first three games. He did not start Wednesday against the Royals, as Carlos Sanchez drew the start against left-hander Danny Duffy. Johnson's two starts came against right-handed pitchers.
The highly touted prospect is batting .333 (2 for 6) with one double in three games. He has no extra-base hits, no RBI, no stolen bases, no walks or strikeouts.
White Sox purchase three contracts for Opening Day
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(4/5/15) The White Sox have officially added pitcher Matt Albers, second baseman Micah Johnson and catcher Geovany Soto to the Opening Day roster by purchasing their contracts, the team announced Sunday.
Johnson was named the starting second baseman earlier in the day and will bay ninth in the lineup Monday. He hit .339 with three doubles and six RBI in 59 plate appearances this spring. Soto will serve as the backup catcher and hit .265 with three doubles and six RBI in 34 plate appearances.
|2014 summary: One season after Micah Johnson made the Fantasy world take notice with 84 stolen bases across three levels of the minor leagues, he had a notably lower-key campaign. Splitting his time between Double-A and Triple-A, Johnson hit .294 but stole only 22 bases in 35 attempts. He dealt with hamstring and knee injuries, which could have contributed to the sharp decline in his steals total.
Playing time status: Johnson is competing for the White Sox's starting second base job, and he is considered to be the frontrunner.
2015 outlook: Should Johnson be named as the team's starting second baseman, he has some low-end appeal in standard mixed Rotisserie leagues as a potential stolen base source. In points leagues, he is strictly an option for deeper leagues.
