"[Pitching coach Mike] Maddux was telling me, 'You're a ground-ball pitcher. Get the ground ball in the first two pitches. Not with a full-count pitch,'" Gonzalez said.
He then fell behind 3-0 against Joey Votto, but struck him out on a slider.
"[Catcher Robinson] Chirinos just said, 'Throw the ball right at me,'" Gonzalez said to MLB.com. "So I did and I got strike one, strike two. Then he said, 'Throw a slider over the plate,' and we got him."

|(3/22/15) Rangers starting pitcher Alex Gonzalez has another shot to earn his way into the rotation Monday, per MLB.com, when the highly touted prospect will face the Reds.
Gonzalez, the Rangers' fifth-ranked prospect, has an outside shot for one of two spots up in the air, but thus far, has a 4.15 ERA this spring. He went 12-6 at Class A and Double-A last season.
"I've learned to make quick adjustments as the game goes," Gonzalez said. "I have had a couple of outings where I have done OK. I'm trying to take the positives out of it and prepare me for wherever I am."
Alex Gonzalez still in the running for spot in Rangers' rotation

|(3/17/15) Rangers starting pitcher prospect Alex Gonzalez survived another round of cuts Tuesday, leaving him in the running for a spot in the team's rotation, per MLB.com.
"We are in a situation where are looking at two slots," manager Jeff Banister said. "We are not taking anybody out of the mix who is in the mix."
Gonzalez, however, is left to compete against a long list of candidates. They include Ross Detwiler, Nick Tepesch, Nick Martinez, Ross Ohlendorf, Anthony Ranaudo, Lisalverto Bonilla and Anthony Bass.
Gonzalez, who hasn't pitched above Double-A, is 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA through three spring outings (one start). He has allowed four runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out nine in 8 2/3 innings.
"He has pitched effectively," Banister said. "He is calm and composed and has been able to get all his pitches in play. This is going to be a nice effective pitcher at the major-league level."
Rangers pitcher Alex Gonzalez battles through first spring start

|(3/9/15) Rangers pitcher Alex Gonzalez may be getting the chance to join the starting rotation with the pending news of Yu Darvish, reports the Dallas Morning News.
Gonzalez made his first start of spring training Monday and battled through three innings with 58 pitches. Manager Jeff Bannister liked how Gonzalez battled through his three scoreless innings.
"He showed poise and presence on the mound," Banister said. "I'd heard about that and that's what I saw. That third inning, it started out as a little bit of a challenge, but, all in all, it turned out to be a good day."
Gonzalez had a 50-pitch limit, but was trying to get through the start in 30.
"Coming out of the bullpen, I told [catcher Chris] Gimenez, 'Let's get this day done in 30 pitches'," Gonzalez said. "I jinxed myself. I wish I wouldn’t have thrown so many pitches early on, but I’m happy they gave me those extra six pitches to get out of my own inning."
He recorded three strikeouts and three walks, allowing two hits on the day.
