Dodgers prospect Julio Urias out a month for eye surgery

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/18/15) Dodgers top pitching prospect Julio Urias will miss at least a month of action after undergoing elective surgery on his left eye to repair a defect, according to MLB.com.

Urias is expected to have the procedure on May 28 to remove the peri orbital benign mass.

"Obviously, one of our main intentions -- independent of the procedure -- is to protect Julio and limit his workload," said director of player development Gabe Kapler. "We're mindful of pitch and innings totals for every pitcher in our organization. Our aim is to take a long view approach to Julio's progression with laser sharp focus on long-term health. A blow midseason made sense to us."

He also noted the condition has never limited Urias' ability on the mound. He is 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA in seven starts for Double-A Tulsa.

Dodgers send pitching prospect Julio Urias to minor-league camp

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3/14/15) Dodgers top pitching prospect Julio Urias has been assigned to minor-league camp as a part of the team's first wave of cuts this spring, reports MLB.com.

Urias, along with Chris Anderson, Ryan Buchter and Josh Ravin were all sent down. Although Urias is considered the top prospect for Los Angeles, he will begin his season in the minors.

"Our standard answer right now is that we won’t see him (in 2015). He's 18," manager Don Mattingly said last month. "Nobody wants to retard his development at all. He’s moving forward. He had (87 2/3) innings last year. He’ll get more this year. There’s a plan to continue to build his innings and get him ready for the big leagues."

Dodgers not planning to call up SP prospect Julio Urias in 2015

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/26/15) While Dodgers starting pitcher prospect Julio Urias continues to impress early on in spring training, the team is still tempering expectations for the 18-year-old left-hander. As of now, the Dodgers are not planning to call him up in 2015, per FOX Sports.

“It’s pretty hard not to like what you see,” manager Don Mattingly said. “It’s a nice, clean delivery. The ball comes out easy. He’s still very young but seems wise beyond his years, as far as pitching. Everybody likes what we see.

“Our standard answer right now is that we won’t see him (in 2015). He’s 18. Nobody wants to retard his development at all. He’s moving forward. He had (87 2/3) innings last year. He’ll get more this year. There’s a plan to continue to build his innings and get him ready for the big leagues.

“At this point, it’s not about him being in the big leagues. It’s about him developing.”

Urias is 4-2 with a 2.41 ERA and 1.11 WHIP through 43 career minor-league outings (38 starts). He also has 176 strikeouts in 142 innings.
