Pirates SP prospect Nick Kingham has Tommy John surgery

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/28/15) Pirates starting pitcher prospect Nick Kingham underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, the team announced Thursday. He will be sidelined 12-18 months.

Kingham was considered the Pirates' sixth-best prospect by MLB.com. He was 1-2 with a 4.31 ERA in six starts for Triple-A Indianapolis this season. He is 28-29 with a 3.35 ERA in 103 career outings (99 starts).

Pirates awaiting second opinion on Nick Kingham (elbow)

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/10/15) The Pirates are awaiting a second opinion on the elbow of pitching prospect Nick Kingham, who was removed from Wednesday's Triple-A start due to "elbow discomfort," MLB.com reports.

"We'll see where Nick Kingham takes us and how long he's going to be down for. Obviously, he's going to be down for a while," general manager Neal Huntington said. "We've chipped away at our depth, and we're going to have to have some guys continue to grow and develop. We may need to add, depending on where we go. It's going to factor into our roster decisions moving forward. But again, the ability to add a Charlie Morton here sooner [rather] than later certainly is a nice addition."

Kingham is 1-2 with a 4.31 ERA and 32:7 K:BB ratio in 31 1/3 innings over six starts with Triple-A Indianapolis.

Hurdle: Pirates in 'no hurry' with Nick Kingham

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/12/15) With Brandon Cumpton out for the season, the pitchers on the Pirates' depth chart have moved a step up in their pursuit of a major-league roster spot, but manager Clint Hurdle indicated Thursday that the team won't rush prospect Nick Kingham to the majors, MLB.com reports.

"Will it change his seeding?" Hurdle said.. "Yeah, because it changes everybody's as they all move up a notch. But we're in no hurry with Nick. He went from Double-A to spend some time in Triple-A [in 2014] and he was able to build, and I believe some of that has carried over into here. We want to make sure he continues to grow and gets to a very competitive spot when time comes for him to arrive."

Kingham tossed two perfect innings Thursday and has now racked up four scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks in two spring outs.
