|Rockies add seven to 40-man roster |
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
(11/20/13) The Rockies added infielder Rosell Herrera, outfielders Kent Matthes and Kyle Parker and pitchers Jayson Aquino, Raul Fernandez, Tyler Matzek and Kraig Sitton to the 40-man roster Wednesday.
Herrera hit .343/.419/.515 with 16 home runs, 76 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 472 at-bats with Class A Asheville last season. Matthes .281/.334/.503 with 20 home runs, 63 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 431 at-bats between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Colorado Springs. Parker hit .288/.345/.492 with 23 home runs and 74 RBI in 480 at-bats with Double-A Tulsa.
Aquino went 0-10 with a 4.34 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 73:26 K:BB ratio in 87 innings between low Class A Tri-City and Class A Asheville. Fernandez went 2-2 with a 6.29 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 55:11 K:BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings with Class A Asheville. Matzek went 8-9 with a 3.79 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 95:76 K:BB ratio in 142 1/3 innings for Double-A Tulsa. Sitton went 6-5 with a 2.93 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 63:27 K:BB ratio in 67 2/3 innings with high Class A Modesto.
|Rosell Herrera went from being a complete nobody to a pretty enticing long-term option at low Class A Asheville last year. Of course, that particular affiliate is known for its misleading stat lines, with Trevor Story being a perfect example from last year. But the scouts seem to think Herrera is the real deal, and they'd know better than anybody. They don't buy into every aspect of his performance. In particular, the steals seem unlikely to translate to the majors. But he has the build of a power hitter and may have taken his first step down that path in 2013. Fantasy owners certainly have time to figure it out. Having just turned 21 and most likely still a full season away from Double-A, Herrera isn't breaking into the majors anytime soon. But in dynasty leagues, now is the time to get in on a potential game-changer at a historically weak position.
