Phillies backup catcher spot up for grabs

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(2/28/15) The Phillies know Carlos Ruiz will be their opening day starter behind the plate. However, manager Ryne Sandberg is unclear as to who will backup Ruiz when the season begins, reports Philly.com.

"That's one of the areas in camp I think there's some competition," Sandberg said. "[I] need some game reps and game situations to really see them. I like the way that they're all going about it as a group. To get them into games and see how that goes, that will play big in that decision."

Cameron Rupp, Koyie Hill and John Hester are all vying for the position. Rupp is considered the favorite, according to the report, with the most pro experience, hitting .183 with six RBI and four runs scored in 60 plate appearances last season.

"Nothing's handed to anybody," Rupp said, "so I come out every day looking to get better, work on things that I need to improve on, and put my best foot forward."

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro might add shortstop, catcher during camp

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/10/15) Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said he doesn't plan to add a veteran shortstop or catcher before spring training opens, per ESPN. However, he could add to the roster at both positions during camp.

According to the depth chart on the team's official website, Carlos Ruiz remains the starting catcher and Cameron Rupp, who has played just 22 games at the major-league level, is his backup. Freddy Galvis is listed as the only shortstop in the wake of Jimmy Rollins' trade to Los Angeles.

Phillies GM on catching situation: 'We're short there'

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2/5/15) The Phillies enter spring training with a severe lack of depth behind starting catcher Carlos Ruiz, who is 36 and could be trade bait to a contender at the July deadline, reports Philly.com. "We're short there," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. admitted.

Cameron Rupp is the current backup. He batted .183 in 60 at-bats last year.

Tommy Joseph is the only other catcher on the 40-man roster. The highly-touted 23-year-old prospect is coming back from August wrist surgery and might start the season at Double-A. He took his first batting practice a couple weeks ago.

“We’d be in trouble if Chooch goes down, so we have to continue to keep an eye on that,” Amaro said recently. “We’ve had some dialogue with some clubs about possible trades to add depth there, too. We’ll see. I think that may be something that gets more resolved in spring training than anything else.”

Phillies announce September roster moves

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(9/1/14) The Phillies announced their September callups on Monday.

Before announcing the moves, Philadelphia transferred pitcher Cliff Lee to the 60-day DL to create room on the 40-man roster. The team recalled infielder Cesar Hernandez, catcher Cameron Rupp and right-handed pitchers Luis Garcia and Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Additionally, the team purchased the contracts of infielder Maikel Franco and outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr.. Right-hander Mike Adams was also activated off the disabled list.

Cameron Rupp coming up

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(6/19/14) Phillies catcher Cameron Rupp has been promoted to the majors Thursday.

Rupp appeared briefly with the club last season, but has not been up in 2014. He's hitting .167 over 108 at-bats in Triple-A.
