Mets SP Dillon Gee (groin) may need an extra day of rest

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/8/15) Amidst reports that the Mets may need a spot start soon, a source told the New York Daily News that starter Dillon Gee may need an extra day of rest. Gee is currently scheduled to start on Sunday against the Phillies, which would be prospect Steven Matz ' turn in the rotation at Triple-A.

Matz is no longer listed as the starter for Las Vegas' game on Sunday. The team has yet to officially announce any plans to call up Matz or any other pitcher for an upcoming start. The team could simply move Bartolo Colon and Jacob deGrom up to pitch on normal rest, should Gee need to be skipped.

Gee, who is dealing with a groin issue, has pitched well in his last three starts, giving up four earned runs in 19 2/3 innings.

Mets' Steven Matz continues his dominance with a 12-strikeout outing

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(5/1/15) Mets starting pitcher prospect Steven Matz, considered the No. 3 prospect in the organization by MLB.com, continued his dominance on Thursday, striking out 12 in Triple-A Las Vegas' 7-2 win over Reno.

"In the beginning, I was trying to overthink a little bit. I struggled to get out of the first inning," Matz said, per MiLB.com.

"I was trying to go with a different gameplan and [pitching coach] Frank [Viola] told me to go back to what I was doing before, what I was having success with. It was pitching off my fastball, establishing my fastball. I was starting out with a lot of offspeed stuff, and I never really established my fastball."

Matz, who took a no-hitter into the seventh inning his last time out, allowed one run on five hits and two walks in seven innings of work, lowering his ERA to 1.84. The left-hander has won three consecutive starts, and owns a 31:14 K:BB ratio over 29 1/3 innings pitched to start the year.

He permitted two hits and a walk while striking out five over seven scoreless innings of Las Vegas' 12-0 win over Reno in Triple-A action.

Matz lowered his ERA to 2.01 on the season.

Mets SP prospect Steven Matz allows one run in Triple-A debut

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(4/10/15) Mets starting pitcher prospect Steven Matz made his debut for Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday and fared pretty well over 5 1/3 innings.

The left-hander reliever, who is one of the Mets' top prospects, allowed one run on three hits and three walks, while striking out four against Fresno.

Matz threw 50 of 84 pitches for strikes. He held Fresno batters to a .188 average.

Mets send Steven Matz to minors

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/21/15) The Mets optioned pitcher Steven Matz to Triple-A on Saturday, ending his quest to earn a spot in the team's rotation to start the season.

Matz had a 1.50 ERA in six spring innings, allowing three hits and striking out three.

"I knew coming in that the staff is pretty stacked & they have their 5 guys and I really wasn’t expecting to make a starting spot," Matz said, per Matt Ehalt of The Record

When asked if Matz could pitch in the Major Leagues right now, manager Terry Collins gave him a vote of confidence, saying, "I don't see why not," per the Daily News' Kristie Ackert
