Mets SP Steven Matz sharp in second start

by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(7/5/15) Mets rookie starter Steven Matz showed no signs of a sophomore slump in his second start Sunday, dominating the Dodgers over six innings to improve to 2-0 as New York rolled to a win.

Matz was nearly unhittable during his time on the hill, striking out eight batters while walking two. He gave up just two hits, both singles, during his 101-pitch outings.

Matz is now 2-0 on the season, and has lowered his ERA on the campaign to 1.32. He continued to be impressive with the bat as well, driving in a run with an RBI groundout.

Mets' Steven Matz impressed on mound, at plate in win

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(6/28/15) Mets pitcher Steven Matz was impressive on the mound and from the plate in his major-league debut.

In Sunday's 7-2 win over the Reds in the second game of a doubleheader, Matz gave up two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings of work. He struck out six batters while allowing five hits and three walks. His major-league career begins with a 2.35 ERA.

However, from the dish, Matz went 3 for 3 with a double and four RBI. Two RBI came on a double and two others came on one of his singles.

This marked the first time in MLB history a pitcher notched four RBI in his big-league debut. It's also the first time a player at any position got four RBI in their debut in Mets franchise history.

"He was ready," manager Terry Collins said, per nj.com. "He was ready to show people he belonged in the big leagues and today he did that.

Mets going to six-man rotation, Steven Matz to debut Sunday

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/26/15) Mets starting pitcher prospect Steven Matz will make his MLB debut Sunday against the Reds, general manager Sandy Alderson announced Friday.

Alderson also said the team will go to a six-man rotation for the "foreseeable future," as Matz will join a rotation that features Bartolo Colon, Jonathon Niese, Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom.

"They're on board," Mets manager Terry Collins said, per NJ.com. "As Sandy alluded to, certainly this is in their best interest, a few of them. At the time we did it before things were moving pretty good, guys were pitching pretty well. We went back, we changed it, couple guys didn't pitch all that good even on regular rest.

"They understand we're going to give this a shot, we're going to take a good strong look at it. It's to benefit the whole organization, basically, so that we look up and everybody is pitching. We're not pushing guys back, we're not skipping, guys are out there and competing. That's what they want to do."

Matz's arrival means Niese will get bumped from Sunday to Tuesday against the Cubs.

Matz, who is considered a top-100 prospect by Baseball America (No. 33) and MLB.com (No. 66), went 7-4 with a 2.19 ERA at Triple-A Las Vegas. He totaled 94 strikeouts in 90 1/3 innings.

Since returning from Tommy John surgery in 2012, the left-hander is 24-20 with a 2.29 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 365 2/3 innings. He is striking out 9.4 batters per nine innings in his career.

Report: Mets on verge of promoting Steven Matz

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/25/15) The Mets could be on the verge of promoting starting pitcher prospect Steven Matz to the majors, according to Fox Sports.

Two different team officials declined to comment when asked about Matz's promotion, but something appears to be in the works, according to Ken Rosenthal. However, one source told Rosenthal the Mets are calling up the elite pitching prospect. The Mets could be pondering a six-man rotation again.

Following Thursday's game against the Brewers, Collins did not confirm the report, but he acknowledged an announcement about a rotation addition will happen Friday.

Matz, who is considered a top-100 prospect by Baseball America (No. 33) and MLB.com (No. 66), continues to have a strong season in the minors. He is 7-4 with a 2.19 ERA at Triple-A Las Vegas. He has totaled 94 strikeouts in 90 1/3 innings.

Since returning from Tommy John surgery in 2012, the left-hander is 24-20 with a 2.29 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 365 2/3 innings. He is striking out 9.4 batters per nine innings in his career.

GM: Gee's demotion 'probably' clears way for Matz's promotion

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(6/15/15) Mets pitcher Dillon Gee, who was filling the role of sixth starter, was designated for assignment Monday, the team announced.

Gee's removal from the roster "probably" means starting pitcher prospect Steven Matz will be promoted to the major-league roster soon, general manager Sandy Alderson said, per MLB.com. However, Alderson wouldn't put a timetable on the lefty's promotion.

Matz has developed into one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. He is considered a top-100 prospect by Baseball America (No. 33) and MLB.com (No. 66). Matz is 6-4 with a 2.30 ERA at Triple-A this season and is 23-20 with a 2.32 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in four seasons in the minors.
