Mets send Steven Matz to minors

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/21/15) The Mets optioned pitcher Steven Matz to Triple-A on Saturday, ending his quest to earn a spot in the team's rotation to start the season.

Matz had a 1.50 ERA in six spring innings, allowing three hits and striking out three.

"I knew coming in that the staff is pretty stacked & they have their 5 guys and I really wasn’t expecting to make a starting spot," Matz said, per Matt Ehalt of The Record

When asked if Matz could pitch in the Major Leagues right now, manager Terry Collins gave him a vote of confidence, saying, "I don't see why not," per the Daily News' Kristie Ackert

Report: Steven Matz destined to start season in minors

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/16/15) Mets starting pitcher prospect Steven Matz is expected to start the season at Triple-A Las Vegas, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN.

If Matz broke camp with the big-league club and stayed in the majors the entire season, he would be in line to become a free agent in 2020 instead of 2021. The Mets can wait until the 21st day of the season to promote him in order to delay free agency until after the 2021 season.

He went 10-9 with 2.25 ERA in 24 starts between high Class A and Double-A.

Mets' Alderson says it's 'highly unlikely' Matz will move to bullpen

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/12/15) Mets starting pitcher prospect Steven Matz took the hill for the second time this spring Thursday against the Nationals. However, unlike in his first outing when he started the game, on Thursday he followed starting pitcher Jacob deGrom.

Matz allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits in three relief innings. He gave up a home run to Danny Espinosa in the sixth inning, while striking out one batter and issuing one walk. The left-handed hurler has a 1.80 ERA through five innings.

After Thursday's outing, Matz said he would be open to pitching out of the bullpen in the wake of the news left-handed reliever Josh Edgin might need Tommy John surgery. However, general manager Sandy Alderson said it is "highly unlikely" that will happen, per Newsday.

Report: Mets starter Steven Matz has 'no chance' of going to bullpen

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/10/15) Depending on how serious Josh Edgin's elbow injury is, the Mets may be looking for bullpen options. However, LHP Steven Matz will not be one of those options, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Rubin, citing multiple team insiders.

A starting-pitching prospect who will likely start the season in Triple-A, there is "no chance" that the Mets will move him to the bullpen to help replace Edgin.

Mets prospect Matz says he improved curveball, command in 2014

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/24/15) Mets starting pitcher Steven Matz has had a pretty good run in the minors, going 17-16 with a 2.32 ERA over 51 career starts. Although, he admits he made some strides in 2014, going 10-9 with 2.25 ERA in 24 starts between high Class A and Double-A.

"My curveball got a lot better," Matz said, per ESPN. "When I got to Double-A, I just started throwing it more on my sides and stuff. So I think that's why it got better -- just more repetition. It's a 'feel' pitch. So the more I threw it the better I got.

"And then my walks went down when I got to Double-A [1.9 per nine innings, compared with 2.7 with St. Lucie]. I think I was just getting ahead of hitters. I don't really know why. I just felt like I had more command when I got to Double-A."

Matz is now considered the Mets' second-best prospect, according to Baseball America.
