Bullpen blows win Saturday for Cubs RHP Hendricks
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(4/18/15) In his first start of the season, Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks simply pitched lousy. In his second start on Saturday, he simply got screwed.
He appeared destined to win after pitching six strong innings and watching his team take a 6-2 lead into the ninth, but the bullpen blew it and the Cubs required extra innings to pull out the win.
Hendricks lowered his ERA from 10.38 to 6.10 by shutting out San Diego after a Matt Kemp two-run homer in the first. He walked none, fanned eight and retired 14 consecutive batters.
He will again seek his first victory Thursday afternoon in Pittsburgh.
Cubs' Kyle Hendricks allows 5 runs, 8 hits
|by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com|
|(4/12/15) Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks started Sunday's game against the Rockies and gave up five runs on eight hits in Chicago's 6-5 win.
Hendricks lasted 4 1/3 innings with each run allowed earned. He struck out three batters and walked one. He was credited with a no-decision in the outing. Hendricks gave up four of his five runs in the second inning. This was his first start of the season.
"I had nothing out there, and was just trying to battle and keep them in it," Hendricks said, via MLB.com. "The feel just wasn't there. I don't know what it was. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how you feel, you have to make pitches, and I didn't make pitches. First one's out of the way."
Cubs push Arrieta to Wednesday following Tuesday's postponement

|(4/7/15) Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta, who was scheduled to start Tuesday, got pushed back to Wednesday against St. Louis due to Tuesday's postponement. He'll face Lance Lynn, according to ESPN.
Meanwhile, Jason Hammel was pushed back from Wednesday to Saturday. Travis Wood will take the mound on Friday in Colorado, followed by Hammel and Kyle Hendricks to round off Chicago's weekend series against the Rockies.
Cubs' Kyle Hendricks allows five earned runs Monday
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(3/30/15) Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks surrendered five earned runs on seven hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings while striking out five in Monday's 8-5 win over the Giants.
Hendricks had tossed seven scoreless innings in his first two Cactus League games, but Monday's action was his first in a major-league game since March 14. He's expected to open the season in the team's rotation.
Pitch location a key to Cubs SP Kyle Hendricks' success
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(3/24/15) Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2014, going 7-2 with a 2.46 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 13 starts. A lot of folks are interested to see where Hendricks goes from there in his second MLB season.
While Hendricks was never considered an elite prospect in the minors, despite some pretty good numbers (2.69 ERA, 1.07 WHIP), the Cubs are confident the 25-year-old right-hander can continue to have success at the major-league level.
“He’s shown the ability to make the big pitch,” Cubs president Theo Epstein said, per ESPN. “He has some tools now. He has a really good sinker. His sinker moves straight down. And it’s late. Who cares if its 89 or 88, it gets a ground ball?
“He can make balls look like strikes and strikes look like balls. It opens up a lot. He has a lot of different ways to shape a big pitch in a big spot.”
Joe Maddon is in his first spring with the Cubs, and it hasn't taken Hendricks long to make a strong impression.
“People will not project him highly because he’s not lighting up the gun but he lights up the location,” Maddon said. “Ask a hitter what they think. A hitter is going to tell you by the way he reacts to his pitches. He’s good. He’s real good. He just gets hitters out. They go back to the dugout, they’re all very upset. They’re breaking bats, wondering how did he beat me like that? And that happens 16, 17 times a year when he wins games.”
|2014 summary: Control artist Kyle Hendricks was even better at avoiding walks in the majors than he had been in the minors, and that was critical to his successful rookie season. The Cubs recalled Hendricks in July, and after a sketchy debut, he reeled off a string of six straight quality starts in which he did not allow more than one run in any outing. Hendricks compiled a 7-2 record with a 2.46 ERA, even though he recorded only 47 strikeouts in 80 1/3 innings. In addition to a 1.7 BB/9 ratio, Hendricks was aided by allowing only four home runs.|
Playing time status: Hendricks is all but assured of a rotation spot. Given that he threw 183 innings between the majors and minors, Hendricks is not likely to be subjected to an innings limit.
2015 outlook: Given his ability to limit walks and extra-base hits, Hendricks could be one of those pitchers worth owning in standard mixed leagues, even though he doesn't get many strikeouts. However, there's hope for his K-rate yet, as Hendricks posted a decent 9.1 percent swinging strike rate. Though he will likely regress at least a little, Hendricks is still worth a late-round pick in standard mixed leagues.
