(3/16/14) The Astros want more time to evaluate first baseman Japhet Amador , according to the Houston Chronicle

The club was thinking of asking Amador's Mexican League team, the Mexico City Red Devils, for more time with the first baseman. Japhet Amador needs a week to get ready

by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer
(3/3/14) Astros first baseman Japhet Amador , who missed the start of spring training as he tended to his pregnant wife, won't play in Grapefruit League games for at least a week, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Amador, 27, hit .368 with 36 home runs over 400 Mexican League at-bats last season. He is listed at 6'4" and 315 pounds.

Amador is likely headed to the minors to start the season, but the Astros have some pieces that can be moved to accomodate him at first base or designated hitter, if he forces his way onto the roster. Despite his size, Amador has drawn some praize for his first base defense, and even drew early comparisons to Andres Galarraga.
