Still no decision between Mariners' Taijuan Walker, Roenis Elias

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/28/15) Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon still hasn't named a winner in the battle for the fifth spot in the starting rotation.

RHP Taijuan Walker and LHP Roenis Elias are in the running for the spot. Walker has a 0.00 ERA in 18 innings this spring, while Elias' ERA is 6.75.

McClendon said he wouldn't announce his fifth starter until the final week of spring. Saturday marks the start of the final week, and McClendon said he'd "be close" to making the call, per MLB.com's Greg Johns.

Mariners' Roenis Elias surrenders six runs vs. Brewers

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/26/15) Mariners pitcher Roenis Elias allowed six earned runs on eight hits and three walks in three-pluss innings while striking out one in his team's 15-1 loss to the Brewers Thursday.

Elias came into the game with a 3.86 spring ERA but endured his worst Cactus League performance, giving up four runs in the first inning alone and being charged with two of Milwaukee's three fourth-inning runs. He's competing for the final rotation spot with Taijuan Walker, who has tossed 18 scoreless innings this spring.

Mariners fifth starter down to Roenis Elias, Taijuan Walker

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/21/15) Roenis Elias and Taijuan Walker will each get one more spring start to win the fifth spot in the Mariners' starting rotation.

Manager Lloyd McClendon said that he would make his decision before the final week of camp, meaning that RHP Walker and LHP Elias will have time for one appearance each.

Elias is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA this spring. Opposing batters are hitting .383 off of him. Walker is 1-0 and has not allowed a run in 12 spring innings. He's allowed four hits, for a .100 opponents' average, and struck out 13. That doesn't mean the job is his, however.

"My evaluation is probably a little different than yours. I don't worry about the numbers per se," McClendon said, per Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times.

Roenis Elias battling Taijuan Walker for Mariners rotation spot

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(2/23/15) Three years after coming to American from Cuba, LHP Roenis Elias jumped from Double-A to the Mariners, last season. Now, he finds himself fighting to keep his spot in the starting rotation.

Despite going 10-12, with a 3.85 ERA in 29 starts for the Mariners last year and becoming one of the rookie surprises in the American League, Elias opens spring training battling Taijuan Walker for the fifth spot in the rotation.

The right-handed Walker is a first-round draft pick of the Mariners, and a top pitching prospect in the organization.

That means Elias could find himself starting the season back in the minors.

"There's not a lot of difference between this year and last," he told MLB.com's Greg Johns. "Last year I didn't come in with a spot and this year you could say the same thing. I have to work hard and do what I did last year and even improve on that."

Even if he doesn't win the job in spring, he's earned the respect of Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon.

"He's got to get stronger," McClendon said. "He pitched well when he was healthy. He's got a dynamic curveball. The change-up got better at the end of the year. His consistency with the fastball command needs to be better and if he does that, he has a chance to be a pretty darn good pitcher in this league for a long time."

Stiff competition for fifth spot in Mariners' rotation

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1/25/15) Taijuan Walker, Roenis Elias and Erasmo Ramirez are the leading candidates for the fifth spot in the Mariners' starting rotation, reports the Tacoma News Tribune. "The more competition, the better," Walker told the paper.

"It brings out the best of everyone who is fighting for the spot."

Walker posted a 1.96 ERA in six outings last September after being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.
