Roenis Elias has been clutch performer for Mariners

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/26/15) Mariners starting pitcher Roenis Elias has been pretty outstanding in place of the injured Hisashi Iwakuma. He has not allowed more than three runs in any of his six starts and has allowed a total of three runs in his last three starts following Monday's 4-1 win at Tampa Bay.

"Any time you lose a guy of Iwakuma's status, that's a big hit," manager Lloyd McClendon said, per MLB.com. "But it was nice to have this young man there waiting in the wings. And he hasn't disappointed."

Catcher Mike Zunino said Elias' best attribute is his ability to work himself out of tight jams.

"I think he clicks it in a little bit," Zunino said. "He focuses a little bit more and keeps the ball down in the zone. The way he's been throwing, he has a lot of trust in his changeup. He used that a couple times with guys on base to get ground balls and get us out of the inning."

Mariners P Roenis Elias has another strong game in win vs. Rays

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(5/25/15) Mariners pitcher Roenis Elias allowed only one earned run in Monday night's 4-1 win over the Rays.

Elias went six innings, gave up six hits, totaled six strikeouts and walked three batters. Elias threw 94 pitches and improved to 2-1 for the season.

This is the third game in a row that Elias has only allowed one run. He now has an ERA of 2.56 this season. He hasn't had a game this season where he's given more than three runs.

Elias' next start is projected for Saturday against the Indians.

Mariners' Roenis Elias allows one run in win vs. Orioles

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/20/15) Mariners pitcher Roenis Elias earned the win on Wednesday, giving up just one earned run on six hits in 7 2/3 innings while striking out four and walking none in his team's 4-2 victory over the Orioles.

Elias (1-1) has yet to allow more than three earned runs in any of his five starts, and he was finally rewarded with the win on Wednesday. He tossed seven scoreless innings before the Orioles were able to push a run across in the eighth after he left the game, though the run was charged to his line.

"I had a good changeup," Elias said through an interpreter, per MLB.com. "I hardly threw any curveballs today. I had a good command on my fastball."

Elias owns a 2.76 ERA and 25:9 K:BB ratio in 32 2/3 innings. He's slated to face the Rays in Tampa on Monday.

Mariners' Roenis Elias allows one run in no-decision vs. Red Sox

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/15/15) Mariners pitcher Roenis Elias wasn't a factor in the decision on Thursday after allowing one earned run on eight hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings while striking out two in his team's 2-1 loss to the Red Sox.

Though the Red Sox were able to put plenty of men on base against Elias, the only run he allowed came on a solo home run in the fourth inning. He has delivered three straight quality starts but has also surrendered four home runs during that stretch.

"He was trying to be a little bit too quick and that's what happens with an inexperienced outfielder," manager Lloyd McClendon said of the converted second baseman, per MLB.com. "He really had no play, other than to throw the ball to second. In the end, it really didn't cost us other than a few more pitches for Rodney. They didn't score any more."

Elias owns a 3.24 ERA and 21:9 K:BB ratio in 25 innings. He's scheduled to face the Orioles in Baltimore on Wednesday.

After rotation change, Mariners' Walker to pitch Wednesday at SD

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/12/15) The Mariners have confirmed that right-hander Taijuan Walker and left-hander Roenis Elias will switch places in the rotation. Walker will now pitch on Wednesday against the Padres, while Elias will go on Thursday against the Red Sox, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.

The move was made in-part due to the large amount of right-handed bats in the Padres' lineup. Right-handed hitters are hitting .256 off of Elias during his career, so manager Lloyd McClendon decided to make the change in the rotation.
