Diamondbacks' Oscar Hernandez will have surgery for broken hand

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/11/15) Diamondbacks catcher Oscar Hernandez has fractured hamate bone in his hand. The Rule 5 pick is scheduled to have surgery on Thursday, according to MLB.com. His timetable will be established once he undergoes the procedure. If he is not on the Diamondbacks' active roster to start the season, he'll be returned to the Rays.

Oscar Hernandez pulled from Diamondbacks' game

(3/10/15) Catcher Oscar Hernandez left the Diamondbacks' spring training game earlier than expected on Tuesday.

Hernandez was pulled from the game for precautionary purposes, with soreness in his left wrist, according to the team

Diamondbacks' Oscar Hernandez not feeling pressure in catcher competition

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3/9/15) Diamondbacks catcher Oscar Hernandez is feeling strong in his first ever spring training. The 21-year-old who has never played above Low-A in his career, is a part of an eight-man race for the catching position in Arizona, but he's not feeling the pressure, reports AZCentral.com.

"Honestly, I don't feel pressure," he said. "I just feel like I'm part of the team. I know I'm trying to make the team. I know that. But I have this big opportunity and that's why I'm working hard. I'm confident. That's me. I believe in myself."

He's just trying to take it all in.

"Right now, I'm like an open book — learning, learning, learning," Hernandez said. "I just want to learn about these guys because they're new for me. Details are going to make you better."

Eight catchers vying for Diamondbacks' job

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/7/15) Eight catchers are in Major League camp with the Diamondbacks, and manager Chip Hale said that any combination of them could make the final roster.

24-year-old Peter O'Brien is a former second-round draft pick of the Yankees, who was dealt to the D-Backs last season. He's one of the top prospects in the organization and will get extensive playing time, either at the Major League level or in the minors until he's ready to take the starting job on the big club.

35-year-old Gerald Laird is a non-roster invitee. He'll likely serve as a backup if he makes the roster.

"We know what Gerald can do," Hale told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. "We just need to make sure that he's ready. If and when he makes the team, he'll have to catch. How much can he catch for us? We'll have to figure that out."

Tuffy Gosewisch has the most experience with the team and is likely to take one of the roster spots.

Rule V pick Oscar Hernandez needs to make the big club or be returned to the Rays. Hale praised his defense. ""He's really looked good behind the plate," Hale said. "He kind of makes it hard on the coaches and the manager because every ball he catches looks like a strike. ... He's got great hands back there and he blocks it."

Jordan Pacheco could make the squad based on his versatility at other positions.

Blake Lalli , Matt Pagnozzi and Mark Thomas will have a tough time beating out the five players ahead of them on the depth chart.

Tuffy Gosewisch is front-runner to be D-Backs' starting catcher

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/16/15) Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart confirmed once again to MLB.com on Thursday that the team's search for a catcher is over. The team will head to camp with Tuffy Gosewisch as the starter, Rule 5 pick Oscar Hernandez as the backup and prospect Pete O'Brien on the cusp of making the major-league roster.

"We sat back and thought about it and talked to our guys internally, our coaching staff, and we're not going do to anything," Stewart said. "Tuffy Gosewisch has never had the opportunity to be a front-line guy, but we do know he's capable of handling the [pitching] staff. If we get some offense from him, it would be great.

"The kid Hernandez we know, through our scouting reports, is a good catch-and-throw guy. And we're not expecting any offense from him. So if we get it, that would be great. But even more importantly, we think that Peter O'Brien is going to be ready. Our coaching staff says he has a chance to break with us from spring training. And if not spring training, we expect to see him by May or June."
