Rangers' Michael De Leon experiencing first camp

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/8/15) Rangers infield prospect Michael De Leon hasn't played in spring training during his first camp but has used his time to draw from more experienced players on the roster, MLB.com reports.

"There is so much you can learn by being around experienced players," De Leon said. "What I watched is how they are always under control and how professional they are in all situations. I watched how Adrian Beltre worked and listened to how he's telling me to give 100 percent of myself always and to dedicate myself to getting better. I didn't play, but that's fine this time."

De Leon made his professional debut in 2014, making it all the way to Double-A, and Mike Daly, the team's senior director of minor league operations, praised his high baseball IQ Sunday.

"One thing that he does really well is catch the ball at shortstop," Daly said. "He has a very good internal clock and a very high baseball IQ. He gives managers confidence in knowing that if a ground ball is hit to Michael, he will catch it and throw the guy out. He's a contact bat and he's a legitimate switch-hitter."

De Leon spent most of last season with Class A Hickory, where he hit .244/.302/.295 with one home run and 26 RBI in 336 at-bats.
