Black: Morrow, Despaigne might have slight edge for No. 5 SP role
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(2/26/15) While Padres manager Bud Black is not ready to put odds on the competition for the final spot in the team's rotation, he did seem to indicate Brandon Morrow and Odrisamer Despaigne might be a little ahead of Robbie Erlin and Matt Wisler , per U-T San Diego.
"I think we're going to look at them all, but Morrow and Despaigne have a little something to them," Black said. "It doesn't hurt Matt to go back to the minors. Robbie Erlin was in our rotation last year, made some starts and pitched well at times. He's still developing. I don't know if there's a front-runner, but you can maybe say that Morrow and Despaigne are out there just a touch."
Padres' Black on Despaigne: 'There's not a lot he needs to do'
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(2/7/15) Padres manager Bud Black laid out his approach for second-year pitcher Odrisamer Despaigne in 2015 to MLB.com Thursday.
"I think we're going to try to firm up the changeup, which is rare to add, and work on the consistency of his breaking pitch," Black said. "There's not a lot he needs to do other than understand fastball command and locate the ball."
Despaigne may have a spot in the team's 2015 rotation regardless of whether the Padres bring in one more quality starting pitcher. He excelled at Petco Park in 2014, posting a 1.83 ERA in 54 innings over eight starts, but struggled on the road, where he delivered a 5.31 ERA in 42 1/3 innings.
Odrisamer Despaigne shut down for final week of season
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(9/25/14) Padres pitcher Odrisamer Despaigne has been shut down for the remainder of the season due to lat soreness, U-T San Diego reports. Despaigne ends his season with a 4-7 record and a 3.36 ERA over 16 starts (96 1/3 innings).
Despaigne hasn't decided if he will pitch this winter. If he does, the Padres have asked him not to exceed 30 innings, per MLB.com.
Pain-free session could result in start for Odrisamer Despaigne
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(9/24/14) Impressive Padres rookie right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne threw a pain-free side session Tuesday after leaving his Friday start with lat soreness. He had thrown seven shutout innings against San Francisco before his removal.
Bud Black told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he has not ruled out giving Despaigne a start Saturday or Sunday. "For him, it's 'I don't want to miss a start,'" Black said. "It's a pride thing."
If Despaigne has pitched his last game in 2014, he will end the season with a 4-7 record and 3.36 ERA.
Odrisamer Despaigne dealing with lat soreness
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
|(9/20/14) Padres pitcher Odrisamer Despaigne is dealing with lat soreness, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Despaigne felt some soreness late in his last start. He's scheduled to make his next start Wednesday, but that could be in doubt based on how well he responds over the next few days.
|2014 summary: The Padres signed Cuban right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne to a minor-league deal and little fanfare in May, and by late June he was in their rotation. Despaigne got off to a great beginning, turning in five straight quality starts and compiling a 1.31 ERA over that stretch. After that, Despaigne's results were mixed, but his peripheral stats actually got stronger, as he started throwing more strikes and getting more whiffs. He was skipped for his last turn in the rotation due to a sore lat, so the book closed on his season with a 4-7 record, a 3.36 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. |
Playing time status: Despaigne is likely to begin the season in the Padres' rotation, though it remains to be seen if he will be subjected to an innings limit in his second season.
2015 outlook: Though Despaigne didn't get many strikeouts in his rookie season, he proved to be a good ground ball pitcher. If he can carry over the improvements in control he made over his final two months, he could be a streaming option in standard mixed leagues. On Draft Day, he only needs to be considered in deeper mixed leagues and NL-only formats.
