Padres' Brandon Morrow to return to mound Tuesday

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/29/15) Padres pitcher Brandon Morrow will make a start on Tuesday, the U-T San Diego reported.

Morrow missed Thursday's start with a blister. The team hasn't decided if he'll start for the Padres or in a minor league game. Odrisamer Despaigne, who took Morrow's spot on Thursday, will start the other game.

Padres' Despaigne produces solid performance Thursday

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(3/26/15) Padres pitcher Odrisamer Despaigne continued his solid spring during Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks when he pitched five innings and gave up one run.

Despaigne gave up seven hits while walking two and striking out four. He received a no-decision. Despaigne has thrown 17 innings this spring and given up four runs. Despaigne is competing for the final spot in the Padres' starting rotation.

Padres manager Bud Black said he liked what he saw from Despaigne, but admits he could use better command, reports MLB.com.

"The results were good, but I thought he was a little spotty with his command," Black said. "But I liked the high fastball to some of their power hitters. He battled."

Brandon Morrow has start pushed back due to blister

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/25/15) Padres starting pitcher Brandon Morrow will have his scheduled start pushed back because of a blister on his right ring finger. Instead, Odrisamer Despaigne will take the mound on Thursday for the Padres, per U-T San Diego.

Manager Bud Black told reporters that Morrow's injury should not impact the fifth-starter race much.

"I don't think it impacts it a lot," Black said. "I think Brandon will be out there soon enough to show what he can do.

"There's still a couple weeks for him to build his pitch count. I don't think it does anything to the competition for now for that spot. We've seen a lot from those guys. They're both going to pitch some more this spring. It's a little bit of a setback for Brandon because it takes him off his schedule a little bit. But that's part of what happens in training camp."

Padres Bud Black choosing between Brandon Morrow, Odrisamer Despaigne

by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com
(3/21/15) Padres manager Bud Black has yet to name the fifth starter in the team's rotation at this point of the spring, per UT San Diego.

The battle for the role boils down to two right-handers, Brandon Morrow and Odrisamer Despaigne.

"Still close," Black said of the race to round out the rotation. "They're both very good pitches. We'll continue to evaluate and watch them, but those guys are competing hard. It's probably a better question to answer late in March. They're doing great. It's a good competition."

Morrow struggled on Saturday in 3 2/3 innings, giving up five runs. Despaigne came in after him and yielded one earned run in 3 1/3 innings pitched.

Black liked Morrow's velocity but thought he struggled with placement.

"I thought his overall stuff is what you're looking for -- you look for velocity, you look for sharpness of pitches, you look for the secondary (pitches)," Black said. "He just left too many pitches up out over the plate. They got some balls in the gap, and we couldn't track them down."

Despaigne threw 30 strikes on the day against 24 balls.

"Despaigne got to a pitch count, showed the assortment of his pitches," Black said. "They nicked him for a couple of runs, but again, what you're looking for, we saw some things that were positive."

Padres' Despaigne, Morrow impress in bid to win fifth spot

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(3/6/15) Padres pitcher Odrisamer Despaigne and Brandon Morrow impressed during their first taste of spring action, according to MLB.com.

"I thought they threw the ball well," said Padres manager Bud Black. Both Despaigne and Morrow are competing for the fifth spot in the team's rotation. While Despaigne got the start, Morrow came on and pitched two innings in relief.

Both players were effective, keeping the White Sox off the board for four innings. Despaigne struck out two batters to Morrow's one, but they posted identical stat lines otherwise.

Despite the strong performances, Black said it was far too early to draw any conclusions about who will open the season in the rotation.
