Astros P Brady Aiken says he had Tommy John surgery

by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com
(3/26/15) Astros pitcher Brady Aiken took to Twitter to announce that he had Tommy John surgery on Wednesday.

Aiken talked about the surgery and what he'll have to overcome in a piece on theplayerstribune.com.

"Yesterday, I had Tommy John surgery to fix my left arm. I’m obviously extremely disappointed. I wanted to let my pitching speak for itself, but now there are going to be new distractions. For that reason, I wanted to be the one to tell people what’s happened and make this a fresh start.

"When I visited the doctor’s office and got the news I had torn my UCL, I can’t even begin to express how I felt. I was — and still am — overwhelmed with a lot of different feelings, but mostly it’s disappointment. I won’t be able to pitch this season, and this is going to keep me from doing what I love most of all — competing. It’s going to be frustrating, and not just from a baseball perspective. When it’s 90 degrees at home in Cardiff and the waves are perfect and I can’t surf, that’ll be tough, too. I know the road ahead will be full of patience and hard work, and I’m ready for that challenge."

Aiken was the first overall pick by the Astros in 2014.

Brady Aiken, No. 1 pick in 2014 MLB Draft, to enroll at IMG Academy

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/26/15) Prospect Brady Aiken has decided to enroll at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., to help prepare for the 2015 MLB Draft. Aiken was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft by the Astros, but he did not sign because of issues with the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow.

“We’re excited for Brady [Aiken] to join us at IMG Academy,”  IMG Academy’s Director of Baseball Dan Simonds said in a press release, per the Houston Chronicle. “At IMG [Academy] he will have access to everything from world-class coaches and performance experts to top-notch facilities and the latest technology.”

Even with the concerns over Aiken's elbow, he is projected as a top-five pick, according to the Chronicle. The Astros have the second and fifth pick in this year's draft, but they are not expected to re-draft Aiken after last year's failed negotiations.

Aiken will join Jacob Nix at the IMG Academy. Nix, who enrolled at IMG in January, was the Astros' fifth-round pick last year, but he couldn't sign with the team due to draft pool issues after Houston couldn’t come to terms with Aiken. Nix settled a grievance issue with the Astros in December.

Astros, Brady Aiken unable to come to terms before Friday deadline

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7/18/14) The Astros were unable to come to terms with first-overall pick Brady Aiken before Friday's deadline, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports.

The signing was complicated due to some concern over his UCL. With the deadline passed, the Astros will be compensated with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 MLB First-Player Draft. Aiken will likely join UCLA and re-enter the draft after three seasons.

Astros, Brady Aiken at an impasse

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(7/15/14) The Astros have reached an impasse with first-overall pick Brady Aiken , according to the Houston Chronicle

The main issue stems from medical evaluations revolving around Aiken. Though he is currently capable of pitching, the Astros have offered him less due to some concern over his UCL. Over the past couple drafts, the team has been able to sign their top picks under slot in order to spend more on other players. There's some believe the club is low-balling Aiken in order to utilize this strategy again.

The MLBPA has already expressed concern over the issue. The club has until Friday to reach a deal with Aiken.

Trainer: Brady Aiken 'absolutely healthy'

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(7/7/14) In the wake of a CBSSports.com report saying Brady Aiken has an elbow issue, his athletic trainer, Paul Flores, said the No. 1 overall pick is "absolutely healthy," reports the Houston Chronicle. The Astros have yet to sign the lefty pitcher

"As far as I know, he’s absolutely healthy," Flores said. "He’s strong, he’s healthy — everything is just like before. But I don’t know the business aspect of baseball."

The paper contacted Astros scouting director Mike Elias, but he declined to comment.
