Fuentes not a candidate to close?: The A's shipped closer Andrew Bailey to the Red Sox on Wednesday, leaving an opening for their ninth-inning role. Assistant GM David Forst said Grant Balfour, Fautino De Los Santos and Joey Devine will compete for the team's opening at closer. Brian Fuentes, who has 199 career saves, was not included on that list. (Updated 12/29/2011)

Fantasy Analysis
Fuentes converted 12 of 15 saves last season and posted a 3.70 ERA in 67 appearances. He seems like the most logical candidate to close but the A's have yet to mention him as a possibility. This situation will likely straighten itself out during spring training so owners should stay tuned. If he is in line to see saves in 2012, Fuentes would hold greater value in Fantasy. The reasons vary, the probabilities can be argued, but one thing is certain -- many players could get a boost with a change of scenery. Throwing caution to the wind, Larry Dobrow lists the best players in need of a move.
Brian Fuentes got off to a slow start last season but saw save chances early in the year due to injuries to Andrew Bailey. He would convert 12 of 15 saves over his first 33 appearances, and posted a 4.55 ERA over that span. But after Bailey returned, he moved back to a setup role and did not see another save chance after June. He would post a 2.70 ERA over his final 34 appearances to finish the year with a 3.70 mark -- his highest since 2009. The left-hander is not being considered for the open closer's role in Oakland heading into 2012, which means Fuentes will likely be a setup man. While things could change as the season goes on, Fantasy owners would be wise to leave Fuentes for AL-only formats on Draft Day. (Updated 2/1/12)
