(5/19/13) The Orioles confirmed Freddy Garcia will start Monday, MLB.com reports Sunday. Garcia was on turn to start Monday but was not considered a definite until manager Buck Showalter made the announcement.
Garcia was solid in his Orioles debut but has struggled in two losses since. He has allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits -- including three homers -- over his last two starts spanning 9 2/3 innings.

(5/18/13) The Orioles haven't listed starter for Monday's game against the Yankees, the Baltimore Sun reports Saturday.
Freddy Garcia is the pitcher on track for that start, though Baltimore has not committed to him after he fell to 0-2 with a 5.51 ERA in a loss to the Padres Wednesday.
The 36-year-old veteran flirted with a no-hitter in his Orioles' debut against the Angels in Anaheim, but he has allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits -- including three homers -- over his last two starts spanning 9 2/3 innings. He's lost both those outings with just four strikeouts.

(5/15/13) Orioles starter Freddy Garcia wasn't sharp Wednesday afternoon at home against the San Diego Padres. Throwing a scoreless first inning, Garcia struggled from that point on in his third outing for Baltimore.
Garcia, who took the loss to fall to 0-2 with a 5.51 ERA, threw 75 pitches and could only get two outs into the fourth inning. He walked two and allowed seven hits for four earned runs to score on his watch. He struck out just one and was hurt by a Kyle Blanks homer in the fourth.
The 36-year-old veteran flirted with a no-hitter in his Orioles' debut against the Angels in Anaheim, but has allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits -- including three homers -- over his last two starts spanning 9 2/3 innings. He's lost both those outings with just four strikeouts.
Because Baltimore is dealing with a plethora of injuries to the starting rotation, Garcia should get another start. That is likely to come Monday against the Yankees.

(5/13/13) The Orioles are expected to give the ball to Freddy Garcia to start Wednesday afternoon against the Padres, the Baltimore Sun reported Monday. Jason Hammel will start Friday against Tampa Bay following an off-day Thursday.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter had not decided on the order of the starters following Sunday's win over Minnesota.
The 36-year-old Garcia will match up against the team that released him in spring training. He's 4-2 with a career 2.51 ERA over nine career starts against San Diego.

(5/12/13) The Orioles haven't yet made a decision as of Sunday afternoon about who will start Wednesday against the Padres. The two options are Jason Hammel and Freddy Garcia.
Garcia is 0-1 with a 4.26 ERA through two starts.

| Freddy Garcia's 5.20 ERA in 2012 looked pretty ugly -- especially in light of his 3.62 EA in 2011 -- but he did manage a decent 1.37 WHIP, which should have resulted in an ERA of about a run less. but Garcia was tormented by home runs in 2012, giving up 18 in 107 1/3 innings, and produced a weirdly uneven season. Garcia actually excelled as a reliever last season, with a 2.42 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 22 1/3 innings. But he was terrible as a starter, with a 5.93 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 17 games. He will likely find a job somewhere in baseball; as a starter, he's probably best slotted as a reserve pitcher. As a reliever, Garcia has no value, even though he was far more effective in that role in 2012. (Updated 1/2/13) |
