Fantasy Analysis
Lilly finished up his season on a roll as he won his final three starts for the Dodgers to finish with 12 wins. Lilly allowed just one earned run and 11 hits in his final three starts spanning 20 1/3 innings with 19 strikeouts over that span. The 35-year-old Lilly looked like he didn't have much left in the tank at times this season, but turned that sentiment around with his finish. Lilly will enter next season as a starter and will be worthy of picks in Fantasy drafts beginning in the middle rounds. (Updated 09/29/2011).
With a 12-14 record and a 3.97 ERA, Ted Lilly had a typical season for him in 2011, but it took a furious late-season rally to get his stat line into its normal condition. By the end of July, the lefty had a 5.02 ERA and a very un-Lilly-like 1.29 WHIP. He had been doing his usual stellar job of throwing strikes, but Lilly was giving up more base hits on balls in play than usual. From August 3 on, Lilly made up for his apparent bad luck with a vengeance, holding batters to a .208 batting average on balls in play. In the end, Lilly was who he always has been: an extreme flyball pitcher with great control. Owners who don’t remember his late-season correction will likely pass on Lilly, making him a bargain for owners who recognize that he has been remarkably consistent over the last five years. He is worth taking with a late-round pick in standard mixed leagues, or at the very least, with an early season waiver claim. (Updated 1/4/12)
