Preseason Outlook

Despite his big contract, Matthews has served as a fourth outfielder over the past two seasons, posting an OPS below .700 in each. The 35-year-old had his two years of viability during the peak of his career, but they are over now. Even when he does play, he likely won't give you anything you would want. He is worth a look in deeper NL-only leagues just because he could start in center for the Mets, who will wait for Carlos Beltran to come back after knee surgery that might knock him out the month of April. He will compete for at-bats behind Jason Bay, Carlos Beltran (knee) and Jeff Francoeur when the Mets are completely healthy. It is pretty apparent now, though, the grossly overpaid Matthews is merely a part-time outfielder and useless in most mixed leagues. (Updated 1/22/10)
