| Ramon Ortiz expected to be designated for assignment |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/23/13) Blue Jays starting pitcher Ramon Ortiz is no longer scheduled to start Sunday against the Orioles, as manager John Gibbons announced Thursday Chad Jenkins is slated to start Sunday. As for Ortiz, he's expected to be designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Sean Nolin, who will be promoted to start Friday's game.
Ortiz is 1-2 with a 4.08 ERA through four outings (three starts). He lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his latest start Tuesday against the Rays.

| Ramon Ortiz expected to start Sunday |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/22/13) Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Wednesday starting pitcher Ramon Ortiz is penciled in to start Sunday against the Orioles, according to the Toronto Star. Ortiz lasted just 2 1/3 innings Tuesday against the Rays.

| Ramon Ortiz doesn't last very long |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/21/13) Blue Jays starter Ramon Ortiz, who has joined the rotation due to injuries to fellow starters Josh Johnson and J.A. Happ, did not fare very well Tuesday at home against the Rays.
With Alex Cobb once again pitching well, Ortiz suffered the defeat as he was out of the game just one out into the third inning. He allowed four earned runs on six hits and a walk over 54 pitches to fall to 1-2 for Toronto. Ortiz surrendered two solo homers in the game and struck out one.
The 39-year-old had given up just two earned runs in his first two starts spanning 12 innings for a 1-1 record. Unfortunately, he also walked five batters in one of those outings and his WHIP is high at 1.64.
It is uncertain at this time whether or not Ortiz will get another start for manager John Gibbons. If he does, it should come Sunday against Baltimore.

| Blue Jays go with Chad Jenkins, Ramon Ortiz |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/18/13) The Blue Jays officially have announced Chad Jenkins will start Monday against Tampa Bay. Veteran Ramon Ortiz will follow him to the hill Tuesday against the Rays, MLB.com reports.
The decision previously was put on hold due to the possibility that one or both of those pitchers could have been needed in the bullpen.
"We're good, we're fresh down there," manager John Gibbons said of his bullpen. "[Jenkins] was in case something happened to Buehrle really early or something."

| Ramon Ortiz impresses in first victory |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/15/13) Blue Jays starter Ramon Ortiz enjoyed plenty of run support during his start Wednesday night at home against the San Francisco Giants. Toronto scored 10 times over the first three innings and Ortiz left the game with an 11-1 lead.
He was able to cruise to victory for his first win of the year as he improved to 1-1 over three starts. Ortiz allowed just one earned run, coming on a Pablo Sandoval sacrifice fly in the first inning. Otherwise, the Giants could not score off him over 100 pitches. He gave up six hits and walked one with one strikeout.
Ortiz, 39, was a bit shaky in his first start of the season on April 17 against the White Sox. However, he started May 10 at Boston and allowed just one run over five innings in a loss. He's given up just two runs over his last 12 innings and has impressed manager John Gibbons.
The Toronto rotation has been hindered by injuries with J.A. Happ and Josh Johnson both on the shelf. Ricky Romero has been unable to find the strike zone consistently. Because of that, Gibbons must keep turning to Ortiz, MLB.com reports. His next start should come Monday or Tuesday against Tampa Bay.
"One thing about Ortiz is he competes; he's been around. He knows what this level of baseball is all about," Gibbons said. "He relies on hitting his spots and getting a lot of ground balls like he did the other day. If he does that, he should be effective."
