Manager open to bringing Rafael Betancourt back next year
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(9/24/14) Walt Weiss has expressed a desire to bring righty reliever Rafael Betancourt back in 2015. The former Rockies closer lost most of this season to Tommy John surgery. He worked his way back to Triple-A Colorado Springs, but was not allowed to pitch on successive days, which prevented him from earning a promotion to Colorado.
"Just on makeup alone, I like what he brings from that standpoint," Weiss told MLB.com about the 39-year-old Betancourt, who is eligible for free agency after this season.
Betancourt saved 45 games for Colorado in a year-and-a-half during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Rafael Betancourt facing live hitters
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
|(6/20/14) Rockies pitcher Rafael Betancourt faced live hitters for the first time Friday, as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery.
Betancourt tossed 26 pitches to two hitters, and will try to throw 30 more Monday, according to MLB.com. If he makes it through that without issue, the team expects him to move on to rookie-level Grand Junction for a rehab assignment by July 1.
Even though Betancourt is nearing a return to game action, that does not necessarily mean his return to the majors is looming. The organization apparently wants to see him pitch at every level in the minors, with a comeback slated toward the end of the season.

|(5/16/14) Rockies reliever Rafael Betancourt continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery, and could be pitching in games next month.
Betancourt, who signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies, threw his second bullpen session Friday. He is working at extended spring training, and MLB.com reports he could begin pitching in Rookie League games in June.
Head athletic trainer Keith Dugger told MLB.com he thinks Betancourt has a good chance to be back in the majors by the end of the year. The 39-year-old had surgery last September to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow.
