Preseason Outlook

Ludwick came out of nowhere to hit 37 home runs and 113 RBI in 2008, emerging as a Fantasy mainstay after sitting on the waiver wire for the first five years of his career. But he came back down to earth in 2009, hitting .265 with 22 home runs. Inconsistency was again a problem for the 31-year-old, which isn't too surprising considering his high strikeout rate. He did most of his damage in April and July, hitting just .234 with 11 home runs the rest of the year. He's still a good bet for 100 RBI with Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday batting in front of him, and the departure of Rick Ankiel means he won't have quite as many off days as he did last year. But he's no certainty for a high batting average or 30 home runs, and in Head-to-Head leagues, his inconsistency will have you ripping out hair by the handful. If he falls to the late rounds, he's a value, but you wouldn't want to draft him as more than your third outfielder. (Updated 1/18/10)
