Olivo remains as starting catcher: Mariners manager Eric Wedge wants Miguel Olivo to continue to serve as the team's starting catcher, according to MLB.com, even though catching prospect Jesus Montero was officially acquired from the Yankees earlier this week. While Montero will serve mostly as a designated hitter and be eased into a catching role, Olivo will get the bulk of the starts behind the plate. Olivo started 120 games at catcher for Seattle last year and hit .224 with 19 home runs. (Updated 01/26/2012)

Fantasy Analysis
Olivo didn't exactly thrive in his first year with Seattle, but at least owners won't have to worry about him losing significant playing time this season. That will help Olivo to maintain his value in Fantasy, but at best, he should be treated as a late-round option in mixed league formats. (Updated 01/26/2012).
01/30/2012 12:08 2012 Fantasy outlooks: Seattle Mariners
The Mariners are obviously in a rebuilding phase, but have they done enough to improve the worst offense in baseball? Al Melchior takes a closer look at Seattle in a Fantasy team outlook.
Miguel Olivo returned to Seattle in 2011 and put up some decent power numbers but struggled to hit for average. While his 19 homers and 62 RBI were his best numbers since 2009, his .224 average and .253 on-base percentage were both well below his career marks. He also struck out a career-high 140 times and drew just 20 walks. The good news was that he was able to play in 130 games – his highest total -- and heads into 2012 as the starter in Seattle. He has averaged nearly 16 homers runs over the past six seasons and his .433 slugging percentage over that span proves that he should be able to keep up his power. He likely won't get much better at age 33 and will have John Jason and Adam Moore pushing him for playing time so target Olivo in deeper Fantasy formats on Draft Day. (Updated 1/3/12)
