Preseason Outlook

For years, Pujols was one of several players to consider with the first overall pick in Fantasy. Now, he's the only one. Forget position scarcity; he outscored the second-best player in Head-to-Head leagues by more than the second-best player outscored the 18th-best, putting him in a class of his own, regardless of position. Pujols led the league in home runs, runs scored, slugging percentage and on-base percentage en route to his third MVP, all while hitting .327 with 135 RBI. He could conceivably lead the league in every offensive category but stolen bases, and he's no slouch there either. He needed arthroscopic surgery this offseason to clean out his troublesome right elbow -- the one with a partially torn ligament since 2003 -- but he had a similar procedure last offseason and came back fine. At this point, avoiding him because of it is like avoiding any player who hasn't had his appendix removed yet. Pujols plays through pain and still plays better than anyone else in the game. If you wind up with the first overall pick in your league's draft, don't even hesitate. (Updated 12/9/09)
