Preseason Outlook

By now, you can pretty well assume Hafner won't get back to playing like he did in 2006, when he hit 42 home runs and led the league in slugging percentage (.659) and OPS (1.097). But if nothing else last year, he showed he might still be able to make a worthwhile contribution in Fantasy. He hit 16 home runs in 338 at-bats, compiling an .826 OPS nearly 200 points higher than the .628 mark he had in 2008, when weakness in his right shoulder wreaked havoc on his power. He had to go on the DL in June with renewed soreness in the shoulder, but he returned in July and stayed relatively healthy the rest of the way. The Indians were extra careful with him, only once playing him more than three days in a row, but they plan to turn him loose again this season, making a 25-homer season possible. And with his walk rate, 25 homers mean something. You wouldn't want to spend more than a late-round pick on Hafner given the risk, but he deserves to be on your radar again. (Updated 1/19/10)
