Preseason Outlook

No one better personified the collapse of the Indians in 2009 than Peralta. The slugging shortstop who once showed so much promise instead delivered a worst-case scenario, his offensive shortcomings proving too debilitating to overcome when the luck stacked up against him. He walked too little and struck out too much, which was nothing new for him, but this time it showed up in his other numbers, such as his .254 batting average, lowest since his rookie season, and his spotty home-run production. The deterioration of the lineup around him limited his other numbers, dropping him from 104 runs scored in 2008 to 57 last year, but that's what happens to a player with a .316 on-base percentage. The soon-to-be 28-year-old could certainly rebound, but he still has to contend with his shortcomings and the uncertainty of the Indians lineup. He's more of a late-rounder based on the hope he returns to the 20-homer range than a mid-rounder based on the expectation. Even if he moves to third base full-time, he'll still have one year of shortstop eligibility left. (Updated 1/5/10)
