Preseason Outlook

It all went south for Doumit in 2009. After taking over as everyday catcher in 2008 and exploding with a .318 batting average and an .858 OPS, making him Fantasy gold at a weak position, the injury bug bit him again. He broke his wrist in mid-April and spent three months on the DL, undoing whatever progress he made a year earlier. He didn't hit so well in his return, only further removing himself from the Fantasy spotlight. But that could work to your advantage. See, when a player misses half the season with an injury as crucial to his swing as a broken wrist, he should struggle initially. But considering Doumit hit .346 with two home runs in September, finally living up to his capabilities, those struggles didn't last forever. Given his injury history, you wouldn't want to draft Doumit before the middle-to-late rounds, but his potential for a .300 batting average and 20-plus homers is legitimate. Again, that would make him Fantasy gold. (Updated 1/6/10)
