Doumit joining Twins: Former Pittsburgh C Ryan Doumit signed a one-year deal with Minnesota on Friday, according to CBSSports.com senior writer Danny Knobler. Doumit battled injuries for most of the 2011 season and managed just 77 games. He finished with a .303 batting average -- his highest since the 2008 season -- with eight homers and 30 RBI. Fantasy Analysis
Doumit declined a team option to stay with the Pirates for the 2012 season and had received several offers from other teams. He is unlikely to play much behind the plate with Twins C Joe Mauer expected to be at full strength for the start of the season. But he has played other positions in his career, including the outfield. Fantasy owners should consider him a low-end option worthy of a selection in the deeper rounds of mixed formats. 01/17/2012 01:56 2012 Fantasy outlooks: Minnesota Twins
The Twins have a long road in front of them. After having a rebuilding-type season in 2011, Minnesota is now in full-on rebuilding mode in 2012. What does that mean for your Fantasy team?
Long considered a rare source of offense at the catcher position if only he could stay healthy, Ryan Doumit lived up to the billing in 2011, hitting .303 with an .830 OPS despite missing all of June and July with a fractured ankle. He was just as effective after returning from the injury as before it, but by that point, the Pirates had more or less moved on from him, starting him about every other day. With the inconsistent playing time, he was unable to make much of a contribution in Fantasy despite the impressive percentages. That figures to change for him after signing with the Twins this offseason. He's back with an organization that values him, and between a banged-up Joe Mauer at catcher, a banged-up Justin Morneau at first base and a DH spot vacated by the offseason departures of Michael Cuddyer and Jason Kubel, he should get back to playing four or five games per week. Few full-time catchers play much more than that, so Doumit has obvious sleeper potential in Fantasy. Of course, he's not any less susceptible to injury now. The catcher position is deep enough that you shouldn't have to gamble on him as your No. 1 option, but if you need a second catcher, he's a good choice in the late rounds. (Updated 1/5/12)
