Infante dealing with sore elbow: The Palm Beach Post reports that Marlins 2B Omar Infante has been dealing with soreness in his right elbow. He developed the problem last month while working out with weights, and he reported to the Marlins' camp two weeks ago to receive treatment. Infante said that he did not feel pain while making throws in a recent practice session, and he expects that he will be fully ready for the team's first set of drills on Feb. 26. (Updated 02/09/2012)

Fantasy Analysis
This does not appear to be anything more than a minor issue for Infante. Due to his defense, Infante will be the Marlins' starting second baseman again this year, but he doesn't offer enough offensively to be worth drafting in standard mixed league formats. However, he should be targeted in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues. (Updated 02/09/2012).
10/21/2011 04:41 By the Numbers: Infield, catcher hits and misses
The second installment of Al Melchior's look back at his 2011 preseason projections in By the Numbers focuses on catchers and infielders.
A year after hitting .321 as a super-utility player to earn the most controversial All-Star nod in the history of the event, Omar Infante got a position to call his own for the Marlins in 2011, taking over for the departed Dan Uggla at second base. Defensively, it went well enough for the Marlins to stick with it, signing Infante to a two-year extension in the offseason, but for the Fantasy owners who drafted the 30-year-old expecting the second coming of Placido Polanco, it was a definite disappointment. Infante hit only .276, which wouldn't be a disaster for most players, but given his lack of pop, it led to a .696 OPS that ranked 15th among full-time second basemen. Before you dismiss him as a viable Fantasy option, though, keep in mind he did show significant improvement in the second half, hitting .314 with an .842 OPS. Because he offers little in the way of home runs and stolen bases, Infante has nothing to fall back on when he's not hitting his best. But if you need a middle infielder who could potentially help in batting average, he'll be available in the late rounds of mixed-league drafts. (Updated 1/25/12)
