| Wil Nieves making the most of his starts |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (6/6/13) Diamondbacks backup catcher Wil Nieves extended his hitting streak to seven games Wednesday with two-hits against the Cardinals. Nieves is batting .500 (11 for 22) with two doubles, five RBI and six runs during his hitting streak.
Nieves is batting .405 (15 for 37) through 10 starts. He has raised his season average to .396 in 17 games, while starter Miguel Montero is batting .200 through 51 games.

| Wil Nieves firing in starting position |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (4/26/13) Diamondbacks backup catcher Wil Nieves was 3 for 3 and drove in a run for the second-straight game during a 3-2 victory over Colorado Thursday night. Nieves, who also had the game-winning sacrifice fly Wednesday, has not had an RBI in consecutive games since Aug. 24-25, 2009, while with the Nationals.
The 35-year-old has started just three games this season but has had a hit in each for a .500 batting average. He also has three RBI; starting catcher Miguel Montero has just 10 in 21 games.

| Wil Nieves finally given a start |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (4/9/13) Diamondbacks backup catcher Wil Nieves drew his first start of the season Monday vs. Pittsburgh. He was 2 for 3 with one RBI before being lifted for pinch hitter Miguel Montero in the ninth inning.

| Wil Nieves emerges as Arizona's No. 2 catcher |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (3/25/13) The Diamondbacks released catcher Rod Barajas, according to The Arizona Republic. Barajas' release means Wil Nieves will be Miguel Montero's backup.
Nieves is batting .345 (10 for 29) with one double and one RBI in 13 spring games.

| Nieves battling for backup gig |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (2/13/13) Diamondbacks catchers Wil Nieves and Rod Barajas are battling in spring training to earn the backup job for the team behind Miguel Montero, reports MLB.com. With Montero expected to miss time to play in the World Baseball Classic, that leaves plenty of competition for the spot for Nieves and Barajas. "It's wide open," manager Kirk Gibson said.
|
| Wil Nieves made his Arizona debut in August last season after being cut loose by the Rockies. In 36 at-bats, Nieves hit .306 with a home run and a double. Overall, he batted .301 on the season. This was, by far, the best average of his career (albeit in just 83 at-bats). Don't expect it to surge past the .260 level in 2013, but he will get more at-bats as Arizona's backup catcher. Still, a 35-year-old backup catcher has little value in Fantasy and Nieves should be left undrafted in most formats. (Updated 12/12/12) |
