| Laynce Nix a hit with Phillies |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (4/22/13) Phillies outfielder Laynce Nix entered Monday's contest against the Pirates having gone 5 for 10 (.500) with two home runs and five RBI as a pinch-hitter. The 32-year-old has also started seven games for Philadelphia.
"I've always felt Nix could hit if he stayed healthy and we got him some at-bats, especially against right-handed pitching," manager Charlie Manuel told MLB.com. "Because when he makes contact, he hits the ball hard. He can help you. He's already helped us. He hit that home run that helped us win a ballgame, and his hit [Sunday] night helped us. That showed how well he can hit the ball hard if he's getting some playing time."

Phils top Mets, give wild Hamels first win of 2013
Ryan Howard snapped a seventh-inning tie with a pinch-hit double, Cole Hamels earned his first win of the season and the Philadelphia Phillies took advantage of a crucial Mets error to beat New York 5-1 on Sunday and finish a three-game sweep.

| Laynce Nix hit 16 home runs over 324 at-bats in 2011, which is probably one of the more under-appreciated power surges in the last couple years. He parlayed that into a bench job with the Phillies, and saw just 114 at-bats in 2012, managing three home runs. If given full-time at-bats, Nix could flirt with 25 or even 30 home runs, but he'll need something like a Domonic Brown implosion and Darin Ruf disappointment to even get in the mix. For now, Nix has no Fantasy value outside of a gamble in very deep NL-only leagues. (Updated 1/4/13) |
