Preseason Outlook

After a freak injury derailed him the last time he got everyday at-bats, Rivera finally got his job back -- and stayed healthy enough to keep it -- in 2009. Sure enough, he lived up to the promise he showed as a part-timer, finishing with career highs in home runs (25) and RBI (88). He struck out only 57 times and has never struck out more than 59 times in a season, making him especially valuable in Head-to-Head leagues that dock points for strikeouts. He did slow down in the second half, which might have something to do with his low walk rate, but his high contact rate should again make him a .280-.290 hitter with above-average power. He doesn't have much room to improve from here at age 31, but that stigma might just make him a sneaky source of serviceable numbers in the late rounds. Really, other than name recognition, what does Hideki Matsui have over him? (Updated 1/18/10)
