Preseason Outlook

Penny had been a much better first-half pitcher in his career, but he turned it around in the second half of last season, proving invaluable down the stretch for the Giants. It earned him a free-agent contract with the Cardinals, who have pitching guru Dave Duncan to reclaim Penny's lost status as potential Fantasy ace. Potential is a key word, because the strong-armed Penny really hasn't put it altogether in any one year of his career. He did have a dominant September, though, going 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA and .205 batting-average against. With the offensively potent and contending Cardinals, Penny could push for 15 victories again and be a great sleeper after the top 75 starting pitchers are off the board on Draft Day. Duncan has certainly done a lot more with far less. (Updated 1/11/10)
